Often times museum employees “are artists who dedicate their days promoting the artwork of others and their nights & weekends creating artwork of their own.” Curators Laura Mustio and Nicole Rosato celebrate this fact with a new show, Behind Our Scenes, opening Friday night from 6-9PM at SPACE (812 Liberty Ave. in Downtown). Rosato herself is the Visitor Services and Volunteer Coordinator at The Mattress Factory, and the artists are all employees of some of the most well-known Pittsburgh cultural institutions: The Carnegie Museum of Art, Oakland; The Mattress Factory, North Side; The Andy Warhol Museum, North Side; Fe Gallery, Lawrenceville; Future Tenant, Downtown; Wood Street Galleries, Downtown. The show runs through February 13, 2010. Read a guest post by curator Nicole Rosato over at The Mattress Factory’s blog!

Some Park and Parking History & Friday is Park(ing) Day in PittsburghParking
This is a neat event that is another creative way to think about our city, transit and how cars fit into the urban landscape. It fits well into the conversation we have been having about if you need a car in Pittsburgh on the post about Zipcar.
Last year, I posted about Parking Day 2008 and recieved this interesting comment that I wanted to share – which puts some historical perspective of how cars have fit into Pittsburgh over the past centruy or so.
I have a nineteenth century “History of Pittsburg” which lists the word “parking” in the index. I thought this odd as I couldn’t imagine someone parking a carriage. When I looked it up, the word meant the placing and creating of parks in the city which was not done until after the Civil War.
Park(ing) Day, Friday, September 18, 2009 is being coordinated by Mattress Factory, the Office of Public
Art and the Community Design Center of Pittsburgh.
More info about Park(ing) Day and some great photos of the parks from last year is available at http://parkingdaypittsburgh.blogspot.com/ Continue reading

The Pittsburgh Twitter community will be getting together at local bars, restaurants, bowling alleys, malls, movie theaters, parks etc… to raise money for Charity:Water. The event is being dubbed as a “Twestival“.Charity:Water is a non-profit organization that helps to bring clean, safe drinking water to those that cannot otherwise afford or obtain it. Let’s break the numbers down… 1.1 billion people don’t have clean drinking water. That is 1 in every 6 people. WOW!
The event, sponsored by BarkleyREI, an interactive agency in Pittsburgh’s Strip District, will take place at Downey’s House on Stubenville Pike in Robinson Township on Thursday, February 12th. From 6-9, you can enjoy food and drinks, live music courtesy of Juan Vasquez from Sauce.

Pittsburgh Parks Conservatory has set up on Facebook and Twitter to make it easier for you to follow their good work. The Mattress Factory does a great job of updating their Twitter account too.
