Some Hot Festivals to Kick-Off Summer (Radio Round Up)

While it is still technically spring, Memorial Day weekend feels like the official start to summer.   I’ll be honest – sometimes it is hard to find events for these 3 day weekends – but that is not the case for this one! This weekend there are a bunch of great free and affordable events to get you outdoors and enjoy this start to summer.  Here are our picks for this weekend that we shared on WDVE (if you are an early riser you can here me most Friday mornings talking about all things Pittsburgh – 6:45 am – 1025. FM).

One of the other things we talked about this morning was Banjo Night at the Elks Club.  Banjo Night is every Wednesday Night, 8pm, The Elks on the Northside (next to the Giant Eagle). – more info here.

Fri. May 25 Wexford Car Cruise

Sat. May 264-7pm Tugboat Print Shop Garden Party

  • to celebrate their latest print “Garden” Tugboat Print Shop is hosting a Garden Party
  • Stop by and check out their shop, see the new print and their entire collection
  • Music, beer and lots of super nice people

Sat. May 26 Parrots of the Caribean Opens at the Aviary

  • The new show at the Pittsburgh Aviary is all about Parrots
  • Show starts May 26 and runs daily (we’re still trying to figure out what times)
 
Sat. May 263pm – 11pm Pyro Fest

  • Hartwood Acres kicks off the summer concert season with America’s Largest Fireworks Fest
  • Fireworks (of course)
  • Live Music – Good Brother Earl, BE Taylor, The Gathering Field, and more

Knitting, Posters and A New Restaurant – Some Links for September 14th

Black and Gold for Knitters too – Yes, here in Pittsburgh – no one is immune from the disease know as Black and Gold Fever – even in places where you might not think sports fans dwell – like a knitting shop! Check out the new display from Natural Stitches – located on Penn Ave in the Trader Joe’s plaza – they have a wall of black and gold yarn – just in time for football season. Tugboat Printshop: DIY SHOW POSTER! – Check out this great posted that Tugboat Printshop created for the Society of Contemporary Craft’s newest exhibit – “DIY A Revolution in Handicrafts” – I have seen these posters hanging up around town and I hope I can pick up one for my walls at home. Tugboat Printshop is located in Lawrenceville but their works can be found around the country and they even have some pillow designs in Urban Outfitters. (Photo – Tugboat Printshop Blog)

Salt Of The Earth

New Place to Eat and Drink in Pittsburgh – Salt of the Earth – Now Open – Salt of the Earth a new restaurant from Kevin Sousa opened on Monday night. It has been really interesting to follow the set up of the new space on Penn Ave – they have done a great job sharing photos and stories on their blog, twitter and Facebook – looking forward to visiting soon.

  • Bonfire from Tugboat Printshop – Check out the latest color wood cut print from Pittsburgh’s Tugboat Printshop – they have included lots of photos of the print process here too. Tugboat Print shop – works out of their home in Lawrenceville and they also offer framing too.
