More Bakery Suggestions

French BakeryImage by celeste343 via Flickr

Thanks to everyone who replied to last weeks post about favorite local bakeries! I loved reading everyone’s responses and it is great to know that there are still quite a few local bakeries beyond the newer cupcake shops in town. Here are a few more bakery suggestions that were emailed to me.

Gluuteny – A gluten free bakery in Sq. Hill. One friend of IheartPGH swears by their brownies and he is even a gluten eater.

Bartram House Bakery – I know this is a drive but this place looks amazing

Jean March Chatellier – French baker in Millvale – check out the penguin cakes.

New Coffee Shop in Morningside

A friend and Morningside resident recently took me to the Morning Glory Coffeehouse on Chislett Street (1806 Chislett to be exact).  I’m a simple drip coffee drinker with a spoon-standing test for strength and the Morning Glory passed with flying colors.  Also, the apple turnover my friend purchased was delicious.  The decor was bright and modern with lots of vintage accessories like flowered thermoses and cool milk carafes.  While any coffeehouse that invites you to “throw a record on our turntable” garners immediate hipster cred, the staff is friendly and the bright colors of the vintage books and games keeps everything feeling fresh.  Morning Glory also has free wireless and live music events.    window.jpg   counter.jpg

Passports: Art of Diversity – Estate Sale and Gallery

Having just returned to the area I’ve been hitting up flea markets and Goodwills as well as doing my fair share of garage sailing.  I’ve inexplicably started reading the Pennysaver, which I have never really done before.  I was intrigued by an estate sale ad that advertised the gamut of antiques, furniture, art, jewelry, and vintage clothes.  I was also excited because it started at 8am this morning, and being currently unemployed, this meant I could be there for first crack at the bounty. “Stuff Your Stocking” on the South Side

The South Side Local Development Company will host its 2nd Annual “Stuff Your Stocking” holiday shopping event on Saturday, December 8, 2007 from 12pm-
5pm.
Shoppers are invited to visit the many unique South Side shops and restaurants
featuring sales, giveaway items, and refreshments.

Shoppers will start at either Dave’s Music Mine (1210 East Carson Street) or De Stefino (2751 Sidney Street) where they will receive event shopping bags, shopping checklists, and a list of store specials. Then, let the shopping begin!
There is no fee to participate and no pre-registration necessary. Shoppers are asked to simply spend their day with us, and as the saying goes, “Eat, shop, and be merry!” Several South Side restaurants will offer event day specials, so lunch and dinner breaks are encouraged.
The South Side is one of Pittsburgh’s longest commercial districts. Participating shops stretch from 8th to 28th streets, so shoppers should dress comfortably. Although, the event starting points will be staffed until 4 p.m., many participating shops are open much later and shoppers are welcome to continue shopping!
Parking lots are located in the 1200 and 1900 blocks of East Carson Street, 18th & East Carson Street, 18th & Sidney Street, 21st & Sidney Street and at South Side Works accessed from 26th and 28th streets.
