Steel City Biofuels Hosts Green Drinks

I have blogged about Green Drinks here at IheartPGH and I have attended some of these events in the past. Green Drinks is an international happy hour where anyone who wants to talk about all things green can meet up with other green thinkers. There are Green Drinks gatherings in cities all over the world. The Pittsburgh Green Drinks usually meets up at Bossa Nova on the 3rd Friday of every month. While I like Bossa Nova – it is really not the best place to have a meet up like Green Drinks – it gets a little too loud and it is hard to have a real conversation in a place like Bossa Nova on a friday evening.

This month – Steel City Biofuels will be hosting Green Drinks at their new offices which are located in Point Breeze (they are in the same building as Construction Junction). I was lucky enough to be invited there for lunch earlier this summer. Their new offices are great and this will be a great chance to learn about Steel City Biofuels and check out a Green Drinks in a not-so-loud location. Beer will be provided by the local brewing establishment and Pittsburgh lover East End Brewing.

Bikes and Beer

Yes, That is a keg in that child carried.  Scott from East End Brewing is very serious about the Pedal Pale Ale.  For the third year in a row they will bike the beer to the tap spot and all bikers get a free beer from the first keg.

If you’re just joining us, here’s how this works: You show up here at the brewery on Friday, May 23rd at 6:30pm (Yes, we’re still open for Growler Hours that day, but I’ll warn you that car parking might be
tight with all the bicycles… nice!), get signed in with someone who looks like they’re in charge, collect your token – a very important step, and be ready to follow the bouncing keg(s) that I’ll be pulling,BY BICYCLE to this year’s mystery tap spot.  We’ll take a low-speed, family friendly, meandering, human-powered, beer delivering, two wheeled tour of Pittsburgh’s greater East End.  Upon our arrival, we’ll get the keg(s) into position, and for everyone who made the trip, the first round of Pedal Pale Ale, from the very first keg of the year, is on me!

Yes, the pace will be gentle.  And no, there won’t be very many hills….need I remind you that I expect to be pulling at least one 160 pound keg of beer behind me.   Besides, I spend all my waking hours brewing these days, which leaves very little time to train for a ride like this. We’ll also be using a much nicer trailer than the  poor thing I dragged along last year – or so the guys at Bike Pittsburgh (www.Bike-Pgh.org) tell me.  Less roadside bungee cord wrangling should be involved this year, and all that time can be better spent with a pint of fresh beer in hand!

What is your favorite Restaraunt

WQED has a poll on their websites for the best restaurants in Pittsburgh.  This is your chance to vote for what you think are the best restaraunts in town.  Click here to cast your votes – you get to enter anything you want, no check boxes here.  This is a great way to help support some of your favorite local businesses.  I have no idea why they need categories for best chain – so I suggest you skip that one.  This list is also missing a category for coffee shop – which I think is an important thing to recognize.  Here are some of my answers:

  • AMERICAN: Cappy’s – I love the pretzel sticks
  • BARGAIN: The Pretzel Shop
  • CONTINENTAL: Does anyone actually still use this term?
  • DOWNTOWN LUNCH: Franktuary – Hot dogs, fancy potato chips, wifi, awesome.
  • MEXICAN: MadMex – because they celebrate important holidays like ground hog day and leap year.
  • MICROBREWERY: East End Brewing – while this is a brewery not a restaraunt, they definitly do amazing things with beer.
  • OUTDOOR DINING: Harris Grill – Definitely the best patio – letting you draw with chalk was an added bonus
  • POST-THEATER DINING: Palate – Pittsburgh is very lucky to have this place
  • PRE-THEATER DINING: Palate – trust me, its tasty
  • SPORTS BAR: The Sharp Edge – Sports with out being too crazy (and its smoke free!)
  • BEST OVERALL: The Union Project Cafe – I give this the best because this place is all around awesome – amazing food, wonderful people, great cause, great new chef.

East End Brewing Charity Open House

I give this event my highest endorsement. Scott from East End Brewing does an amazing job of putting together great events. I have visited the brewery in the past for an open house and it is a great place to visit. Many of Pittsburgh’s best beer drinkers tend to hang out here.

Last year the charity open house raised over $3000 for PLEA. You can help them beat that number this year!
