Hostel Party – Help Pittsburgh Get A Hostel
First things first, if you aren’t familiar with hostling here is what a hostle is all about from Wikipedia…
Hostels provide budget oriented, sociable accommodation where guests can rent a bed, sometimes a bunk bed, in a dormitory and share a bathroom, lounge and sometimes a kitchen. Rooms can be mixed or single-sex, although private rooms may also be available. Hostels are generally cheaper for both the operator and the occupants; many hostels have long-term residents whom they employ as desk clerks or housekeeping staff in exchange for free accommodation
Pittsburgh used to have a hostel located in the Allentown neighborhood but it closed a few years ago. Earlier this year a group of Pittsburghers got together to work on planning a new hostel for Pittsburgh. Check out PittsburghHostel.org for more info.
This Saturday they are hosting their second fundraiser called Sleeping with Strangers.

Pool Party to Benefit Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
I think it is a great idea to have an event at the Dormont Pool! I have recently had the opportunity to get to know Brian Supler who is organizing this great event to raise money for CFF (Cystic Fibrosis Foundation). Each year CFF honors 50 of Pittsburgh’s Finest residents while raising money for their organization. Brian has organized an impressive event this Sunday, August 16 at the Dormont pool.
Check out the Post-Gazette article on the party here. Lots of great food and drink (including beer from Three Rivers Underground Brewers).
Note – because there will be alcohol served – no swimming.
Here is some more info on the party …
This year I was selected as one of the 50 Finest. As one of 25 men and 25 women who have been selected as “Pittsburgh’s 50 most eligible men and women”, based on large part on our community involvement and entrepreneurial endeavors, I have been asked by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to raise as much as I can for the fight against cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that shortens the lives of those it affects to a
median age of 37 yearsOn Sunday, August 16th I am hosting a benefit at The Dormont Pool to raise money for the C.F. Foundation and I will be honoring 5 year old Pittsburgh native Sadie Terrick who was diagnosed with C.F eight days after she was born. Sadie will be in attendance with her family that evening, along with Thomas Lloyd, Mayor of Dormont who will officially proclaim August, 16th “Cystic Fibrosis Day in honor of Sadie Terrick”.
This will be a one-night festival of great food, music and drink. Funk, jazz and soul dj/s J. Malls and Edgar Um will play, grilled food by Cioppino’s in The Strip will satiate, drinks by Diamond Vodka, Three Rivers Underground Brewing and Budweiser will quench an est. 200-250 poolside guests will be in attendance. And the space will be illuminated by Andy Shick of ADS Lighting and Staging.
Yart Sale – Buy Art/Supplies/Baked Goods, Support Pittsburgh Center for the Arts
Buy some art, support Pittsburgh Center for the Arts – this sounds like it will be a great Art Yard Sale! Make a day of it and enjoy Bach Beethoven and Brunch at Mellon park from 10:30-Noon.
Join us in the PCA parking lot. Admission and parking are free for this lively, artistic spin on the traditional yard sale.
Featuring over 30 individual artists and several PF/PCA departments bringing affordable original works, prints, decorative arts, art books, art supplies, equipment for art making, and some collectibles.
Things are tight this year, so we thought we could make a little lemonade…We came up with the idea while trimming our budget, and cleaning out storage spaces.
Our department of School and Community Programs will be holding a bake sale, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting that department, and teaching artists specifically.
Ceramics-access Artist Members are producing ceramics to be donated to PCA, and sold to help pay for kiln repairs.
Sunday, July 5 – 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Pittsburgh Party for a Purpose head to Firehouse Lounge this Weekend
Its time for another fantastic party from the folks behind Pittsburgh Party for a Purpose – every other month they get together to host a party at a local watering hole and the proceeds from the evening benefit an area non-profit. I stopped by the last Party for a Purpose back in February at Hough’s in Greenfield. I have to say Hough’s was really great (and our post inspired FoodBurgh to stop by for a full review – FoodBurgh has some great posts and it is great to see they are posting their updates on UrbanSpoon too!)
The next Pittsburgh Party for a Purpose is Friday May 14, 2009 at the Firehouse in the Strip District – all of the proceeds benefit the Homeless Children’s Education Fund.
