  • Pittsburgh Parks CEO to Attend White House Conference on America’s Great Outdoors – Meg Cheever, CEO of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy has been invited to attend the White House Conference on America's Great Outdoors. From the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy email "The conference focuses on conservation and connecting people to the nature. Cheever and the Parks Conservancy are improving quality of life for the people of Pittsburgh in partnership with the City of Pittsburgh."
  • Penn Brewery reopens with a new Pale Ale to benefit The Point – Local beer lovers rejoice! Penn Brewery is reopening with a new Pale Ale – Free event on Thursday 4/15 @ Penn Brewery. Proceeds from the event will support Riverlife's Friends of the Fountain campaign, which kicked last summer to complete the final phase of the Point State Park renovation. Riverlife has raised over $5 million so far.
  • For Earth Day: Give ELoop your old cell phone, and other green moves worth making – For anyone looking for info on recycling your old cell phones… "eLoop, an electronics recycler based in Murraysville, Pa., is hoping Earth Day will inspire people around our region to search their homes for old, outdated cell phones. Their goal is to recycle 1 million unwanted cell phones between now and World Environment Day (June 5) through their new Last Call initiative. "

  • Restaurant Review: Soba – Pittsburgh Magazine – April 2010 – Pittsburgh, PA – Another positive review for a great Pittsburgh restaurant – Soba. Pittsburgh Magazine has an new review of Soba including info about the chef and new menu items.
  • Salt of the Earth – Chef Kevin Sousa will be opening a new restaurant "Salt of the Earth" on Penn ave this summer – he has been posting some update on the restaurants blog about how things are coming together.
  • Salt Themed – Earth Day Dinner at the Cafe at the Frick – A few years ago I discovered sea salt (thank you to costco for including the sea salt with the pepper mill) and so this salt themed dinner caught my eye. On Thurs., April 22, chef Seth Bailey and his staff at The Café at the Frick will host the restaurant's first-ever Earth Day Dinner, which will feature a tasting menu of four courses and dessert based on the theme "Salt of the Earth." Check out some of the interesting items on the menu
  • Banff Ticket Giveaway! : Venture Outdoors – The Banff Mountain film festival is coming to Pittsburgh April 9+10 – Venture Outdoors is giving away tickets daily on Twitter! Check out this blog post for details.
  • Buena Vista Coffee: A tasty touch of Hollywood in the Mexican War Streets – Nice little article from Pop City about Buena Vista Coffee – the former Beleza Coffee shop has been re-opened with a new name and a new look. The shop was used in the filming of the movie "Love and Other Drugs" – in the movie Ann Hathaway works in a coffee shop.
  • Public=Online | The Public Square Project – Last week the Sunlight Foundation – a national organization focused on increasing government transparency – kicked off their new campaign "Public Equals Online" with a panel discussion at the Google offices in Washington DC. The panel included Ryan Hopkins, from Pittsburgh, who is the founder of the Public Square Project – a local effort to building an online hub of information about Pittsburgh government and public policy.

  • Post-Gazette – BRICKS’ booklet essays aim to inspire cancer patients – The Post-Gazette has an article on BRICKS – Building Resources in Cancer Knowledge and Services. A project funded through the Sprout Fund to share information about cancer and young people living with cancer.
  • Bonfire from Tugboat Printshop – Check out the latest color wood cut print from Pittsburgh’s Tugboat Printshop – they have included lots of photos of the print process here too. Tugboat Print shop – works out of their home in Lawrenceville and they also offer framing too.

Links Worth a Look – March 14th

  • Dozen's Summer Cupcake Preview Party scheduled for March 26, 2010 – Stop by the Dozen Bakeshop in Lawrenceville on Friday, March 26 7-10pm to sample the new cupcakes and treats that they will be adding to the menu for the summer. "Join hundreds of cupcake lovers for the biggest party of the year. The cupcake menu preview party brings hundreds of people down to Lawrenceville to sample mini versions of our new flavors a week before the general public gets to try them."
  • Once PA's third-largest shopping district, East Liberty is making a comeback – In case you missed it – here is the March 2, 2010 New York Times article about East Liberty. Yes – East Liberty was once one of the largest shopping areas in the entire state. This article focuses on some of the larger developments that have come to East Liberty – East Side and Bakery Square. While not mentioned in this article – take note that some great local businesses played a part in recent redevelopment of East Liberty too. From the article: "In the 1950s, the East Liberty neighborhood five miles east of downtown was Pennsylvania’s third-largest shopping district, behind Center City Philadelphia and downtown Pittsburgh, with more than 500 local businesses and a population of 14,000."
  • Secret City offers interactive adventure exploring Carnegie Library – A new digital game from the DeepLocal artist in residence – that offers a chance to explore libraries. The next round of Secret City will be in April 2010.
