Memorial Day in Pittsburgh and Team Rubicon

Last week I wrote a post about how much of this blog as been inspired by my work in local political campaign.  While I have been writing about Pittsburgh, I have also been working for a number of business and organizations – many who I met while working on political campaigns.  One of those jobs was working for VoteVets.org – which is a national Veteran’s advocacy organization.  VoteVets.org was founded by Jon Soltz – who I first met when we were both volunteering on the 2004 presidential campaign.  Jon is a Veteran and after serving two tours of duty over seas, he created VoteVets.org and VetVoice Foundation.  It was an honor to be able to work for Jon and VoteVets.org and I learned first hand about how Veterans have served and continue to serve our country.

One of the Veterans that I worked with at VoteVets.org, is Richard Smith.  Actually, I think I first met Richard at a conference as he is also a blogger.   Last week Richard posted about Team Rubicon on his Facebook Page.  Team Rubicon is an organization where Veterans who have returned to the US, work on disaster relief projects and humanitarian issues.  Richard set up a page to help raise money so Team Rubicon could send more Veterans to assist in the aftermath of the Oklahoma tornado.

Here is Richard’s note about Team Rubicon:

Hello friends,

For those who do not know, Team Rubicon is an organization that deploys teams of Veterans to disaster areas to assist first responders in relief using skills they learned in the military. I really want to deploy to Oklahoma, but being a single dad keeps me close to home.

Instead, I’ve set a fundraising goal to help Team Rubicon provide much needed relief in Oklahoma. Team Rubicon will have initial assessment teams on the ground tomorrow and will have a full scale response in Oklahoma within days. This isn’t new for these guys. They’ve deployed teams to New York for Hurrican Sandy, as well as places as far away as Haiti and Sudan. If you are going to donate to the relief efforts, please consider donating to my fundraiser page.

Early money is important to help get these Vets on the ground as soon as possible.

Please join me in supporting Team Rubicon by making a contribution online here.  Every little bit counts.  (And I know that Team Pittsburgh can certainly help tip the fundraising goal).  While Richard wasn’t able to make it to Oklahoma to help here is a photo he posted on Twitter of the Veterans cleaning up Arlington National Cemetery for Memorial Day.

Here is a snapshot of some of the blog post and photos of Memorial Day celebrations honoring those who served our country.

Peepsburgh Banjo Club

A little Easter treat.  Every Wednesday evening is Banjo Night at the Elks Club on the North Side (the Elks club is the big building across from the Giant Eagle).  Admission is free and from 8-11 pm – live banjo music.  (You can read more about Banjo Night from PopCity Media and Everything Better Pittsburgh)

This peeps display was sitting on the table in the back of the room.  I am not sure who created it – if you know, please leave a comment so we can give them credit.  If you haven’t been to banjo night yet, yes there is a disco ball over the stage.

Speaking of peeps… The Washington Post runs an annual Peeps Diorama Contest.  This years winner is “Twinkie: Rest in Peeps”

Happy Easter!  Hope you have a lovely day celebrating with your friends and family.

What to do on Valentine’s Day in Pittsburgh

Four events around town to celebrate February 14 in Pittsburgh.

Ringing in the New Year with Bar Marco

So the dilemma was this: New Year’s Eve was approaching and I had nothing to do that I hadn’t done before. When suddenly out of the sky falls Bar Marco’s niche bash, including all-you-can-drink, all-you-can-eat, and a burlesque show… problem solved.

Having only been to Bar Marco once, I had only somewhat of an idea what the clientele and drink selections were. I arrived to a swanky cocktail party filled with people dressed to the nines. The upstairs hall was subtly-lit with red spotlights and candles on a bunch of small tables. For the first time in recent memory, this was also a party with music just loud enough, but not too loud to drown out conversation. Kudos to you, sound crew.

Drink and food service was quick and with a smile. I personally can’t imagine having to tend bar on New Year’s Eve, but they did it with gusto. The tip jar overfloweth, and rightly so.

There’s something unique about conversing with total strangers about the merits of gun control and the finer points of Libertarianism, followed by a tasteful burlesque show. The new year was rung in by everyone with much rejoicing and champagne spillage.

The only downside to the evening was the coat situation. No rack or check was provided, which created a bottleneck at the exit at the end of the night. We’ll excuse it for everything else excellent about the party.

I highly recommend Bar Marco’s New Year’s Eve bash for next year, supposing they host again. It was every bit as fun as First Night, only warmer and with burlesque. So, I’d say that it actually one-ups First Night.
