A Taste of Oakland

Oakland is probably the most delicious neighborhood in Pittsburgh. More tasty treats are packed into a few blocks, all conveniently located near hospitals and universities. This event looks like it is a recipe for success – $5 gets you free samples at 24 local dining establishments plus free admission to the Carnegie museum and free rides on the carousel – I don’t know why you would want to ride that after eating your way down Forbes ave, but if the merry-go-round is your thing, then it is an extra good deal for you.

Greek Food is Good Food

It is the most wonderful time of the year in Pittsburgh, and I am talking about more than the weather. It is time for the annual Saint Nicholas Greek Food Festival of deliciousness. I heart ethnic food festivals as much as I heart PGH. These food festivals are the big part of what make Pittsburgh great – people volunteering their time, to benefit their communities and to serve really great food.

St. Nicks is probably the biggest and tastiest of the food festivals in the area. There is often a line, but it is worth the wait. There is seating in the very large gymnasium and under the tent outside which is right on Forbes Avenue, just across from the Carnegie Museum of Art.

As if the food was not reason enoug to attend, you could run into your favorite Steeler.  From The Burgh Blog -Troy Palamalu attended the Greek Food Festival last year.

The Festival runs Sunday May 4 to May 9, 2008. More details, a menu and pick up order form are available here.

Festival Hours:

Dinner: 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM

13th Annual Empty Bowls Dinner

This event has come highly reccomended from a number of IheartPGH readers – thanks for the great suggestions, please keep sending them.

Eat soup, support good causes, take home a handmade bowl.  Local artists have made and donated bowls for this event.  $20 gets you in the door, a meal of soup and you can pick out one of the bowls to take home – over 1200 bowls have been donated for this event.  Live music and celebrities (who have created some bowls too) and silent auction.

Celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King at the Union Projects annual Martin Luther King Junior Day event.  I have been told that this is one of the best events of the year.  Start the evening off with a free community dinner beginning at 6pm.  Stay for performances and reading of Dr. King’s works by local students.  All are welcome to attend.
