Discover Pittsburgh is an annual event hosted by PUMP (Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project), to get some of the best organizations together in one room. Discover Pittsburgh is one stop shopping to learn about many of the great groups and organizations here in Pittsburgh. Just graduated from college? New to Pittsburgh – this event is for you!  The fun is followed by Quiz Night at the Pittsbrugh’s newest dining establishment The Red Ring.

Inline Skating Is Still Cool

I am one of a handful of Pittsburghers that still breaks out her rollerblades on a regular basis – they usually are in the truck on my car so on a nice day I can stop at the Jail Trail on my way home.

I know there are a number of people out there that thin rollerblading is very 1989 because they make fun of me anytime they hear that I like to skate. Oh well, too bad for them. If you aren’t a pro on 8 wheels yet, that is okay.

Venture Outdoors is offering an intro to Inline Skating course on Sunday May 4, 2008 on the Jail Trail (also know as the Eliza Furnace Trail). I am including the details below.

If you are already a skating pro and want to meet others in Pittsburgh – check out TRIC – Three Rivers Inline Club. I like their slogan – “We skate everything but the rivers” – an they skate everything. I attended the beginner skate a few years ago and was out skated by everyone. TRIC leads weekly skates around city neighborhoods complete with safety patrol to keep the skaters safe from cars. More info available at SkatePittsburgh.com.

Intro to In-line Skating
Put your legs to the test with this fun introduction to in-line skating sponsored by The Three Rivers In-line Club and the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Skate Patrol. We’re going to skate at an easy pace along the Eliza Furnace Trail learning to glide, stride, scissor and brake from trained, skilled members of the National Skate Patrol.

Pittsburgh is about the Neighborhoods – A documentary about East Liberty

Chris Ivey is a Pittsburgh based filmmaker who has traveled around the world working on documentary films. Over the past 2 years he has been working on a film about East Liberty called East of Liberty. I had a chance to see some of the raw footage when Chris started working on this and in the past year he even shown the film in London. East of Liberty is a look at the stories and the people of East Liberty who aren’t usually the ones getting the media attention around some of the current development there. The Union Project is showing the film as part of their Monday conversation series about the neighborhood. I think this is well worth attending. I am including the details below the video clip. Urban Hike is Back – and in search of a 24 hour donut shop

I am sitting here looking out the window at SUNSHINE. Last saturday was perfect weather – and I enjoyed walking around Lawrenceville on Saturday afternoon. See my post about the Slaughterhouse Gallery here. I just checked Weather.com and we are looking at another 70 degree weekend.

So it is time to get outside and not do yard work. Thankfully Urban Hike is back for the 2008 season. If you are a regular reader of IheartPGH – you will know I heart Urban Hike. I have been on number of their hikes and give it a huge endorsement.

Please don’t let the word hike scare you – this is a walk, through an urban area – you are almost always on cement so just wear your sneakers and you will be fine. The walk takes about 2 hours and the leaders have lots of fun historical facts to share so the pace is not too fast.

On Saturday April 26, 2008 – Urban Hike heads to Crafton. They are meeting at the Sharp Edge Creek house which is one of those places I have always wanted to go to but not had a chance to visit yet.

We’re starting the season in Crafton, the boyhood home of Bill Cowher and the current home of a 24-hour donut shop and much more. Spend a few hours exploring the area with us on Saturday, April 26th beginning at 1:30 pm. We’ll park at the Sharp Edge Creekhouse, 288 W. Steuben Street. Check out their web site to see a map and get a taste for what we’ll be tasting after the hike.

Our hike will last 2-3 hours. As always, we recommend that you wear comfortable shoes, and bring water, sunscreen, and a sunny disposition. If you haven’t hiked with us before, no RSVP needed-but if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail us at info@urbanhike.org. See you there!

Pittsburghs Signs Pictures Wanted

A few years ago, on Penn Ave, just after you crossed Negly as you drive toward town there used to be this awesome Atari sign painted on the side of the building. It was by far a favorite of mine and one day it was gone before I could get a picture.

Thankfully there are some great people in the area that love signs more that I do and they have been collecting pictures of Pittsburgh signs for a few years now. The Pittsburgh Signs Project just might be one of the coolest websites in town. I think it is a great intersection of art, photography, history and technology all rolled into one interesting website.

To celebrate Pittsburgh’s 250th Birthday the Pittsburgh Signs Project is publishing a book of these pictures and they are looking for your pictures too. They are looking for pictures of signs from the 14 counties that make up Western, PA and everyone is invited to submit 5 of their photographs. More Info at www.PittsburghSigns.org
