Take a Hike

Our friends at Urban Hike are at it again. This week is is a tale of two Hills – Polish Hill and the Upper Hill. This is a great way to meet some cool people and to check out some of Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods.

Here is what they have to say:

a hike through the Upper Hill and Polish Hill (with a little bit of Oakland thrown in for good measure).
We’ll visit a historic bank, get a great 360-degree view of the city,
and hear about some budding Scorseses. Meet us in front of Schenley High
School on Centre Avenue.

Parking:
We don’t have permission to park at the school. You can find street
parking on Bigelow Boulevard (not the BIG Bigelow Boulevard, the one that’s a
block away from Schenley High).

More info is available at: http://www.urbanhike.org

talking transportation with Dan Onorato

here is a fantastic opportunity for some great things:

1. Talk about transportation in Pittsburgh (This is one area that needs some love to help Pittsburgh fulfill it greatness as a city – We need to speak up about loving public transit that other cities have).
2. Learn about the League of Young Voters
3. Visit the Union Project
4. Eat good food
5. Hear good music

Some Good Ideas:
Clothes you bought and never wore
Small stuff you bought while thinking “I’ll fit into this one day…”
Tragic shopping mistakes
Well worn and loved items that have exceeded their stay in the closet
Unloved gifts that you held on to out of obligation
NEXT:
Wash and sort your discards: women’s, men’s, & miscellaneous; tops,
sweaters, outerwear, shorts, pants, skirts, dresses, footwear, fabric,
(no underwear, please) Stains/holes a-ok (as long as they’re not too
gross)! There’s potential in everything.

Men, we need your clothing too!

i heart dock

An old furniture store in Braddock is the new site of a collaborative public art project between Braddock, The STUDIO for Creative Inquiry and The Carnegie Mellon School of Design.

This building will once again cast light on Braddock Avenue. The five large glass-block windows which run up the eastern corner will have alternating light projections of contour line images of landmarks in Braddock transitioning to large projected letters. The word spelled out in the four top windows will change between DOCK and DOCC. The name Braddock is often spelled -Braddocc- by younger generations there.

Things are happening in Braddock, keep an eye out for more interesting projects in Braddock. It is exciting to see that people in the area are seeing great potential in the ruins of a town that has gained a reputation for being a wasteland. For more information on Braddock and the opportunities for creative development there check out the Mayor’s website – http://www.15104.cc/

This is a picture of the project during the light up night celebration. It was a happy coincedence that one of the other spectators is a fellow Pittsburgh lover.

I heart Braddock
