Links Worth a Look – February 2nd

Here are some links/articles/blog posts that are worth a look:

  • Day 62 of 365 Days of Beer – East End Smokestack Heritage Porter « 365 days… 365 beers – Drew lives in Pittsburgh and is drinking and blogging about a new beer every day for 365 days. Check out his post on the East End Smokestack Heritage Porter. He is currently on day 83 of this challenge. This blog looks great and has nice photos of the beers too. Maybe we can meet up with Drew one of these days to try out some other Pittsburgh beers.
  • Post-Gazette Article on Digital Marketing – Fizz or fizzle? Pepsi ads end-run Super Bowl, go digital – This is an interesting article from the Post-Gazette for 2 reasons. 1. a look at how Pepsi is approching Super Bowl ads – rather than TV they are spending money on community grants voted on by the online community. 2. This article highlights some of the Pittsburgh advertising firms and the work they are doing in digital marketing.
  • Growing Power's National-International Urban & Small Farm Conference – I had the opportunity to visit Growing Power, which is an urban farm located in Milwaukee last year during the GLUE (Great Lakes Urban Exchange) conference. It was an eye opening visit to learn about food sourcing, urban farming and land use. If you have any interest in small and urban farming this is a great organization to check out and I am sure this will be a fantastic conference.

I have tried to stop blogging about this Super Bowl fun but each time I come back to my computer I find more that I think is worth sharing. I apologize if you are an IheartPGH reader and not a Steelers fan, I am assuming most of you love the Steelers, but if football isn’t your thing just hang in there for a few more days.

The DVE Morning Show is has been posting updates from Tampa on Twitter – twitter.com/dveradio

From Out of the ‘Burgh, In the Pitts this Pittsburgher in Texas writes about an Arn-Free Super Bowl – they  can’t find any Iron City Beer in in Texas – they were even willing to pay $60 to have it shipped to Texas but aparently you can’t ship beer to Texas. Any Texans have some extra Iron City to share.

Even NullSpace has an Obligatory Steelers Post with some interesting Steelers info – including a link to the story behind the steel logo on the Steeler’s helmets.

YNZnNYC is so excited for Sunday he can’t sit still.

Pittsburgh's Chef Bill Fuller Brings the Bacon and The Terrible Towel to the Today Show

Description unavailableImage by arvindgrover via Flickr

Big Burrito’s (They are the folks behind the most tasty dining spots in Pittsburgh – MadMex, Kaya, Soba and others) Chef Bill Fuller (and food blogger) appeared on the NBC today show this morning (it will air here in Pittsburgh at 1pm) for a Super Bowl cook off. Bill is a regular guest on KDKA’s Pittsburgh Today live and does a great job. Today was no exception. He put together an amazing spread of super bowl food that shows off Pittsburgh. On super bowl days – fried onions are vegetables.  In addition to burgers and bacon – Bill shows off some other local favorites – Iron City Beer and Gobs.  Where can one purchase those delicious looking treats?

Count Down to the Super Bowl

Steeler fan and the gnomeImage by daveynin via FlickrThere is a whole lot of reporting and blogging going on about the game next Sunday.  They are filled with Steeler and Pittsburgh love  Here are a few links that are worth a look…

OneForTheOtherThumb.com – “These are the non-sensical ramblings of a man obsessed with the Pittsburgh Steelers.”  This is some serious  Steeler’s love.  Help him decide where he should watch the big game here.

St. Petersburg Times article on the Steelers connection to Pittsburgh “Bond between Steelers, city unmistakable.” This sentance from the article sums it up…

But the Steelers? They are Pittsburgh.

Post-Gazette Coverage on Steelers gear – you can order Terrible Towel chocolate bars.

Pittsburgh Food Delivered – Tribune Review article on other items you can have shipped anywhere in the US (and maybe  farther – can you ship food outside of the US?) Mineo’s Pizza, Pieorgies, Mancini’s Bread

Facie’s Ramblings – Black and Gold Smiley Cookies are here.

But that is beauty of being a Steelers fan and part of Steeler Nation; you just know your team is going to go back to the Super Bowl again. Sure, it might take a few years, maybe even a dozen or so. But it will happen.
Our nation has a new president (more on that later). But more importantly, Steeler Nation has a big week ahead. As a local resident of Steeler Nation, I will continue to listen to the various fight songs on the radio and watch the endless news clips about the game, players, etc. And I will wear Steelers gear as much as possible throughout the next eight (hopefully nine or ten) days.

Be a Fan of Steeler Baby on Facebook, Pittsburgh Fire Department and What to Do If Your Pipe Bursts

steelerbabyImage by jonbro via FlickrWell I am a little behind in celebrating Steelers fever here because I returned home on Saturday night to an indoor waterfall. 2 little cracks in a copper pipe less than a half inch can cause a lot of water to come through the ceiling.

I want to post a few things about the frozen pipe situation because one of the first things I did after rescuing the computer from the rushing water was to google “pipe burst” and “pittsburgh emergency plumbers” and the results weren’t helpful.

So after an hour of calling 24 hour plumbers in the yellow pages to come shut off the water – yes we tried to shut it off but the handle was broken – I finally asked the answering service lady what to do. (I secretly think she is the same lady that answers the phone for every plumber in the phone book and she was getting a real kick out of my return calls). She said call the fire department. So after another plumber telling me he could come over after he went to church (it was now 2am) and I didn’t think I should let this water fall continue for another 10 hours. I called the Pittsburgh Fire Department – Thank You, Thank You, THANK YOU to the 4 firemen who arrived with in minutes to shut of the water and make sure the house wouldn’t burn down (the water was coming through the light fixtures). They were even kind enough to sing happy birthday to me before they left.

I also want to thank Joe at Preferred Restoration who kindly talked me through what you should do after you get the water shut off and how to minimize damage (and is possibly the only person in the yellow pages that actually offers 24 hours response). Joe had a crew at the house by 10 am and was able to get a plumber there by 11am. Within a few hours the water was gone and both the first floor and basement have super humidifiers and 10 super turbo fans running. Out with the water – in with the wind tunnel.

If you have a great plumber to recommend – please share in the comments below. If you are a plumber that likes to answer late night calls – you should let us know that too.

So I had to take a nap before the Steelers game! I am glad that Pittsburgh is going to the Super Bowl because there are alot of Steelers things I didn’t get to post about before the game. Starting with Steeler Baby. We have been a fan of Steeler Baby since 2006 (see the original post here). You should be a fan of Steeler Baby on Facebook too – they currently have 893 fans – I think we can easily help them get to 1000. You can even get a Steeler Baby countdown widget for you blog.
