Drinking For A Cause: Wine Tasting/Art Show This Thursday

The-Tasting-GraphicI always get a bit nervous when the subject turns to wine. I wouldn’t know a good wine if it crawled up my pant leg and bit me on the ass. Unless it did so in a gentle, loving way, and even then only maybe. I know I like dry red with my sauce, I love a good chianti. (No, not with fava beans. I hate fava beans.) Beyond that, I’m a bit at sea when it comes to wine.

Collage By Chuck Schneider But I’m hoping to learn a bit about it this Thursday while enjoying some great local art, as that’s when Jay Verno studios on the South Side will be hosting a combination wine-tasting/art show that also serves as a fund raiser for WYEP. It’s called “The Tasting” and it’s billed as “an event designed to support local artists and their work in the South Side Flats community of Pittsburgh, Pa.” Some of the artists whose work will be shown include collagist Chuck Schneider, photographer Kimberly Reed, sculptor Ian F. Thomas, and painter Scott M. Yoss. You’ll also get a free cd by local Pittsburgh band soulharmonic and can even take home your tasting glass. All that for only ten bucks.

A reminder: Thursday is the new Friday. So go.

Where are all the gay ladies?

When I moved to Pittsburgh last year from a big city, I have to admit that I was a little concerned about the lesbian scene here, or lack thereof–but I was very pleasantly surprised. Despite what I saw on Queer as Folk, it is NOT all about Liberty Avenue, especially not for women. We do have a regular hangout we can head to if we want to shoot pool, grab a cold one after softball, or get sweaty on the dance floor. OK, it’s not fancy or anything, but everyone knows that they can always head dahn Donny’s when they want to socialize with other dykes. But a lot more is happening outside the local bars…

Regent Square is probably the best place in town to spot lesbians in their natural habitat. Everytime I go there to meet someone, go for a jog or walk the dogs at Frick Park, I can’t go two steps without running into another dyke. I would definitely recommend this part of town to newcomers! While you’re there, step into The Square Cafe for the tasty food and lesbian eye candy, or D’s Six Pax and Dawgs, for a cheap, loaded hotdog washed down with a cold brew from their amazing selection of beer.

And I’ve discovered that some of the best stuff for gay ladies in the Steel City are things that women have organized themselves. Like the monthly Queers! They’re What’s for Dinner gatherings hosted by Ehrrin Keenan at the Gypsy Cafe on the Southside. If you’re new to town or maybe just want to get out there and meet some fresh faces, you should email Ehrrin–she can put you on her Evite list for the dinners, and on her queers mailing list, which will update you about other happenings of lesbian interest around the ‘burgh. You’ll find out about book clubs, game nights, karaoke, singles dinners, political actions, and all kinds of local performances.

Because another thing I love about Pittsburgh are all the talented performers! Soulful local veteran Joey Murphy hosts regular queer singer/songwriter nights featuring well-known acts stopping by on national tours, as well as up-and-coming ‘burghers. Joey also hosts an open-mic night for acoustic singer/songerwiters as part of MySpace Mondays over at Moondog’s. This coming Monday night you can check out the Emmy-winning Carol Lee Espy, get up onstage yourself (there are prizes for participants), or just enjoy a cold drink and soak in the sounds. And it’s not just for the gay ladies–anyone is welcome!

I heart Pittsburgh because of all the gorgeous and talented women who make it such a great place to live. If you want to know more about the local dyke scene, email Ehrrin to get on the mailing list, check out the Pittsburgh Dykes profile on MySpace, and read the Pittsburgh Lesbian Correspondants’ newsy and political blog.

Esquire + Dee’s sitting in a tree

I was in Carson News today and I saw another plug for the South Side … The June 06 issue of Esquire magazine profiles the best bars in America, among them Dee’s Cafe. Considering their modest prices, laid-back atmosphere, and oldies on the Juke Box, this may be a surprise to many old-time South Siders, I’m sure. 😉 But this is why we (and the country) loves the ‘burgh. They write:

dee's
Dee’s Cafe
PITTSBURGH

YOU’RE HAVING: Yuengling, late.
A twenty-three-ounce beer for only $2.25. Pool tables, three jukeboxes, and Ping Pong. Every ‘Burgh bar crawl goes though Dee’s. (1314 East Carson Street 412-431-1314)

As the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recalls, “You might remember a few years ago Esquire ranked Pittsburgh as the No. 1 City That Rocks. They must have stopped at Dee’s along the way.”

World Cup w00t – Piper’s Pub!

fifaPublic service announcement:

Piper’s Pub on the South Side is here to fulfill all of your 2006 World Cup watching needs. Their 2006 broadcasting schedule has just been posted. All matches will be shown live, including the ones (8 to 10 in all) being tape delayed by ABC.

Actually, there are some pretty good match-ups this year, and I’m gonna try to make it to a game or two … hmm … Germany vs. Poland, June 14th? Guess who I’ll be supporting? 😉 The place has a really good atmosphere and they’re putting a fancy flat-screen TV in the dining room to broadcast the games.

Pipers is located at 1828 East Carson St. They have bottle and draft beers from England, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Scotland … and one of the most extensive collections of Scotch in the area. Plus bangers and mash, Shepards pie, and all of our other favorites from across the pond. Check out their web site:
