A Hot Time, In This Town on Saturday Night – Hothouse is this Saturday

While writing this I just keep thinking of the summer camp song Old Lady Leary with the following lyrics …

Late last night when we were all in bed,
Old Lady Leary left a lantern in the shed.
Well, the cow kicked it over, winked his eye and said:
“There’ll be a hot time in the old town tonight!”

If you are a regular reader of IheartPGH you will know that we are big fans of the Sprout Fund – this Saturday, August 29 is Hothouse – the Sprout Funds annual fundraiser that promises to be a hot good time.

Why support the Sprout Fund? The Sprout Fund has a couple of programing areas that are doing some great stuff for the city of Pittsburgh

  • Seed Award – gives out grants to all sorts of people and projects here in Pittsburgh (I am a member of the seed award committee – people in Pittsburgh have awesome ideas :))
  • Public Art Program – putting up great murals around town
  • Spark – the newest program at the Sprout fund focusing on programming for the kiddies in town

Why Hothouse? So not only is this a big fun party – each year they pick a venue to show a unique Pittsburgh space. Last year the party was held in the upper floors of the Union Trust Building. This year the party is at the new Bakery Square. Continue reading

Public Art Gets into Google Maps

Google Street ViewImage via WikipediaThanks to Laura without Labels for blogging about this project today. Pittsburgh is one of those cities on Google Street View – basically google drove around the city taking panoramic photos of allmost every street and used fancy computer technology to stitch those photos together – you can drive down a street and check out a 360 view from the comfort of your own computer.

Well thanks to Roin Hewlett & Benn Kingsley’s Street With a View project there is a lot more to see on the Google Street View of Sampsonia Way – earlier this year they staged a scene for the street view photos.

Now when you take a tour of Sampsonia Way on Google Street view you will see all sorts of things from a giant chicken, to a parade with the Langly high school marching band.

Click here to check out the map.

Here is a video about the project:

More Public Art Please

Philadelphia - Bella Vista: Sounds of PhiladelphiaImage by wallyg via FlickrA few years ago I attended an informational meeting about the Sprout Fund’s public art program to learn more about murals in cities. What I took away from that brief meeting was a new appreciation of the idea of public art – I had never thought much about the idea of bringing art to people in their neighborhoods. Museums are great and Pittsburgh has some great museums but you have to go there to see the art. The Sprout Fund’s program was based on the public art program in Philadelphia which now has over 2200 murals around the city.

Pittsburgh has always had some interesting public art – some of which has been lost and found over the years and the Sprout Fund has supported the addition of new murals each year.  Click here to read about some of the new public art along the Great Allegheny Passageway.

If you are interested in learning more about Public Art – check out this work shop on Saturday, October 25, 2008 called Public Art 101. This day long workshop is being held at Point Park University Downtown and the presenters are involved in Public Art in Albuquerque, NM, Boston, MA and Pittsburgh. Continue reading

Video Artworks by School of Art Students Shown on Jumbotron at PNC Park, April 15

EDITORS NOTE: This looks like an awesome event. More info is available at www.CaughtLooking.info

PITTSBURGH – Students and faculty in the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University have found a massive canvas for their public art: the Jumbotron at PNC Park. The students and faculty present “Caught Looking,” an exhibition of new, one-minute video artworks, to be shown on PNC Park’s massive Jumbotron Tuesday, April 15 starting at 7 p.m. The Warhol museum is also presenting a lengthier, 15- to 30-minute video. The event is free and open to the public. The Warhol Museum will host an after party from 9 to 11 p.m. at the museum, where the videos will be shown for a month.

“PNC Park is a unique venue for video art. You don’t typically expect to see art at the baseball stadium, but it’s an amazing experience,”said Jill Kraus Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Christopher Sperandio. “As far as we know, no other art school in the country is using an 85” x 35” high-definition screen as a venue for student and faculty art work.” Continue reading

i heart dock

An old furniture store in Braddock is the new site of a collaborative public art project between Braddock, The STUDIO for Creative Inquiry and The Carnegie Mellon School of Design.

This building will once again cast light on Braddock Avenue. The five large glass-block windows which run up the eastern corner will have alternating light projections of contour line images of landmarks in Braddock transitioning to large projected letters. The word spelled out in the four top windows will change between DOCK and DOCC. The name Braddock is often spelled -Braddocc- by younger generations there.

Things are happening in Braddock, keep an eye out for more interesting projects in Braddock. It is exciting to see that people in the area are seeing great potential in the ruins of a town that has gained a reputation for being a wasteland. For more information on Braddock and the opportunities for creative development there check out the Mayor’s website – http://www.15104.cc/

This is a picture of the project during the light up night celebration. It was a happy coincedence that one of the other spectators is a fellow Pittsburgh lover.

I heart Braddock
