Latkepalooza

[note] Say hello to our new blogger Eric! He has been writing posts about events around town – keep an eye on IheartPGH for more upcoming events and event recaps.  Happy Hanukah! [/note]

After a weekend of being sick I found myself at the Beth Shalom Preschool & Synagogue’s Hanukkah day one celebration, despite only having a periphery involvement with the organization. I, for one, didn’t even know what latkes were. (they’re delicious potato pancakes) But what I found was much more than a hilarious food-based pun: it was a community celebration steeped in tradition.

Beth Shalom Preschool & Synagogue is a local institution in Squirrel Hill. They run one of the best preschools in the city and have a lovely facility. Teachers and staff were out in full force on Sunday. Arts and crafts, an olive oil menorah, dancing, even Steelers jerseys written in Hebrew. As on outsider to the community, I found it all very welcoming. This was a close-knit community coming together to celebrate the season, and it was a huge success.

Mad Lovin’ – MadMex Valentine’s Day Special

The folks at the Big Burrito restaurant group are good at special events – check out their latest newsletter for a run down of all of their restaurants – reservations are suggested.  ( I just looked at OpenTable for Tue. Feb 14 – there are a few seating left for early – before 5pm or late – after 9:30pm at Soba, Casbah, Umi.)

Should you need something on the wild/casual/affordable side – Mad Mex has a valentine’s day deal $35 gets you a four course dinner for 2.  And a deal that is sure to please those that are happily single, couples on a budget (or if you happen to be on a bad date) – MadMex has you covered with $6 Big Azz Margarita’s all day.  From what I can tell this deal is available at all Pittsburgh MadMex locations.

Cookies and Cards Reception for the CHS Holiday Gift Card Drive

We are happy to support the Community Human Services (CHS) holiday gift card drive again this year.  This is a great and easy way to support CHS and help them get holiday gifts to some Pittsburghers who might not have much of a holiday.  Last years Cookies and Cards event was a blast – a nice chance to hang out with some old friends and to meet some new ones.  This year the event will be held at the Shiloh Grill in Mt. Washington.

CHS has been working in Oakland and neighborhoods around Pittsburgh since the early 1970s.  CHS offers a variety of programs to serve people in the Pittsburgh area.  CHS has a range of programs to help those dealing with homelessness and mental health.

You can help CHS with their holiday programming by donating a gift card or two.   Stop by the event on Monday December 5 or you can send gift cards to their offices in Oakland

Pittsburgh Holiday YouTube Fun

Well-packed tin of Eat n Park smiley cookies.

I am sorry I didn’t get to post this before Christmas but the Eat N  Park star commercial is a classic – so we can still enjoy it after Christmas too. (I love that EatNPark continues to air this commercial each holiday season – read more about the commercial and lots of other smiley things on the EatNPark Blog here).

And here is another holiday video that is sure to bring some joy (and I believe it was filmed here in Pittsburgh too!) what is sure to become a new holiday classic – Let the Belly go Jelly.

Best Holiday Commercial EVER!

Of course it is from Pittsburgh! According to the YouTube comments this commercial has been running since 1982.
I was thinking that I had not seen this commercial on TV yet this holiday season. A quick search of YouTube solved that. Eat N’Park’s Public Relations has even put together a schedule of when the commercial will air if you want to watch it on real TV.
