This Sunday Take an Urban Hike Around the Upper Hill & North Oakland

From the Sharpsburg Urban Hike

Urban Hike is another one of the best kept secrets in Pittsburgh. For over a decade a group of faithful volunteers have been mapping and researching routes around different Pittsburgh neighborhoods.

This Sunday, join the Urban Hike crew for a 2 hour walk around the Upper Hill and North Oakland. The hikes are usually on paved surfaces, but sometimes off road was well.

Grand Opening Celebration for the New Hill District Library

Some of the best places in and around Pittsburgh are the libraries.  When some of these libraries were built they were way more than a place to find books – both the Braddock Library and the Homestead libraries had pools and gymnasiums too.

This Saturday this first new library building in Pittsburgh will open in the Hill District.

Stop by between 9:30 am and 1pm to celebrate the new library with crafts, storytelling, puppet shows and more.

Lovers of Poetry and Other Human Beings

Cave Canem’s annual faculty poetry reading will be held this Thursday, 7 pm, at the Hill House. This year’s readers will be Toi Derricotte, Yusef Komunyaka, Cornelius Eady, and Carl Phillips. We’re very lucky to be hosting these poets in our city, and I’m sure that this reading will be fantastic! (FYI: Cave Canem is a week-long poets’ retreat for African American poets held every year in the region. More info @ www.cavecanempoets.org)

PGH Trivia: Hill Street Blues

I was reading this article today from Bloomberg.com about liens on property in Pittsburgh, how much money is being made and how this complicates redevelopment.  Fun stuff, not so much (It is important stuff though and I reccomend you take a look at the article).  I learned this fun fact from the article – the Hill district was the inspiration for Hill Street Blues.  I did a double take and then went to check this out on Wikipedia (there is some amazing stuff on there).

The name of the show was based on Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Chief writer Steven Bochco attended college at the nearby Carnegie Institute of Technology and used the downtrodden Hill District as inspiration for naming the show.

The Wikipedia also has a page on the Hill District.
