24 Gifts of Pittsburgh: Paper Sculpture Kit from Resident Design

paper lion head scuplture

A lion, a penguin, a bull, a walrus and a mammoth, oh my! Resident Designs offers kits that allow you to create a paper sculpture of your favorite creatures.  Puzzles and gingerbread house kits have become a holiday thing in my family. It Thanks to Trader Joe’s we’ve already made a gingerbread turkey on Thanksgiving Day. I think this is the perfect gift for some holiday family bonding time. (I am counting on the eggnog to numb the pain of any paper-cuts this may induce and hopefully following a complicated set of instructions should provide hours of distraction so we don’t end up discussing politics.)

Resident Designs is a Pittsburgh company that makes the paper sculpture kits right here in Pittsburgh. Kits come with pre-cut paper, glue and instructions for assembling your paper sculpture. The penguin is available in the requisite Pittsburgh black and gold color scheme.

There is also a video offering assembly instructions:

24 Gifts of Pittsburgh: Fair Trade Coffee from Building New Hope

building-new-hope-table

Building New Hope has been one of those things that has sort of been on my Pittsburgh radar, but not something I have blogged about before.  Building New Hope is a Pittsburgh non-profit organization that imports coffee beans from El Porvenir, a worker-owned coffee cooperative in Nicaragua.  The coffee is roasted locally by Coffee 19 in Washington County. Proceeds from the sale of coffee are used to fund two schools and other youth programs in Nicaragua.

Pittsburgh-Fair-Trade-MarketplaceThere are so many great ways to shop local this weekend in Pittsburgh. Saturday, December 5 is the Handmade Arcade at the Convention Center. Kerf Case, #3 on our list of 24 gifts of Pittsburgh, will be there as well as OttoFinn, #1 on our list. The blog Design Crush, which covers art and design from around the world, (but is conveniently located here in Pittsburgh) has published a preview of the 2015 Handmade Arcade here.

This weekend is also the annual Fair Trade Market at ECS (ECS is short for Environmental Charter School) in Regent Square. On Saturday and Sunday you can shop their huge marketplace of fair trade gifts. Building New Hope is one of the vendors as well as several other fair trade brands. You can see a preview of some of the items that will be for sale here.

Never fear! There are a number of Pittsburgh businesses who are ready and able to help you get your shopping done (and even wrap some of those gifts for you too).

What shops are must stops for your last minute Christmas shopping?

Show Your Love for PGH by Shopping PGH this Holiday Season

Christmas tree in Pittsburgh, PAImage by lil moe72 via FlickrOne of the easiest ways to support Pittsburgh is to spend your money locally. One of my hopes for this blog is to connect more people to the local businesses here in Pittsburgh. With the start of the holiday season, I can’t believe it is already the holiday season – I tried to ignore the robotic Santa Claus that started singing at Costco before Halloween was even here. But after stopping by the Shady Side Presbyterian Church Bazaar last weekend, I can no longer pretend that the Holiday Shopping Season is weeks away.

I know that holiday spending is down this year, but that makes it even more important to support the businesses that continue to do good things for the Pittsburgh community. Click here to check out the ShopPGH category and read about some of the other Pittsburgh businesses. We will also be featuring more ways to ShopPGH this season with a holiday gift guide look for the tag Holiday08.
