3rd Annual Friends of Dormont Pool Pub Tour

Dormont PoolImage via Wikipedia

Dormont is a neighborhood that is just south of Pittsburgh and it is home to an enormous, amazing and historic  swimming pool which is supported by a community with a huge heart that has been working like crazy to keep the pool afloat (I couldn’t resist).

Friends of Dormont Pool will be hosting their 3rd Annual Pub Tour this weekend

When: Saturday, April 25th, 2009 from 7:00 PM – 12:00 Midnight
Where: Local venues in Dormont.

We’re anticipating all 12 venues will participate this year!
Cost: T-shirts will be sold to support the Dormont Pool at a cost of $15.00

Check out the pool history…

The Dormont Pool dates back to 1920, when Andrew Philp used rocks to dam a creek to make a wading pool. In 1922, the borough spent $6,851 to create a larger dam for a swimming area and an ice skating rink. At the same time they also built a small wooden bath house. The pool was made to give people the feeling of being in the tropics.

Dormont Pool has survived the Great Depression, World War II, and has opened every season. It was declared a Historic Landmark in 2002.

Dormont Pool is #97 on the Pittsburgh Bucket List – what is on your Pittsburgh bucket list?

Looking for Auction Items for the Union Project Annual Holiday Fundraiser

Union ProjectImage via WikipediaSo today seems to be a day of blogging about business. I did some reading about business books this morning so I guess business is on the brain.

One of the places in Pittsburgh that I think is pretty special and that you have seen me write about often is the Union Project in East Liberty/Highland Park. One of the reasons to love Pittsburgh is the great neighborhoods and the sense of community that pulses through this city. The Union Project is a community center that works on a number of different levels to create and support the community around it. I honestly didn’t know that we needed a community center on the corner of Stanton and Negley Avenues, but now I am not sure what we would do with out it. In addition rehabilitating a beautiful historic structure to a functional space for a coffee shop, meeting space, office space and a great hall; the Union Project has worked to provide many resources to the community around it. I am most impressed with the Youth Barista Training Program that works to provide intensive job training for at-risk youth.

Saturday November 22, 2008 is the Union Project’s Annual Fundraiser and Auction – Unwrapped. The Union Project is looking for donations for the auction. If you are a business owner or know a business owner who would be willing to donate something – to the auction please let me know info-at-IheartPGH.com. This is a great way to support the Union Project and to get your businesses name in front of an audience of community minded people. No donation is too small, last year they combined smaller donations into some great gift baskets that were a big hit with the bidders.

Some of the groups sponsoring the event include:

This is going to be a great event, for a great cause. I hope you will consider attending on November 22.

Running in A Red Dress

The Hash Hound Harriers, Pittsburgh’s Drinking Club with a Running Problem are back in RED.  Friday, July 25th, 2008 is their Red Dress Run.  Yep they will be running around town in red dresses – Men and Women, in red dresses.   Check out my post on one of their past runs for a definition of a hash run .

Friday July 25th at 6:30pm
Gene’s Last Chance (in the Strip)
2533 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222
Donation to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – $11
Bring money for trail. Start shopping for your red dresses if you dont have any yet.

For you virgin red dressers:
1. Everyone wears a red dress – men and women.
b. Some do the minimal – wearing red shirts and pants/shorts – pansies!
iii. Some go all out – men in drag and women in prom dresses. – Sexxy sexxy!!!

Then we do a hash in our red dresses. That means we follow a trail of flour, and drink alcoholic beverages.
