Documentaries, Storytelling and Pittsburgh – My Tale of "My Tale of Two Cities"

We have been patiently waiting for the premier of this movie – My Tale of Two Cities, a documentary about Pittsburgh which has been in the works for a few years now. Back in 2006 we posted the invite to come join in a neighborhood sing along of “Its a beautiful day in the neighborhood.” The film is complete and the screening is November 28, 2008 at the Byham Theater. You can read more about the film at MyTaleOfTwoCities.com.

We started IheartPGH after meeting people who didn’t grow up here but choose to live here – each person had a story about what brought them to Pittsburgh. Those stories turned into three years of stories about people and places in Pittsburgh. So it is hard not be excited about a documentary length story of Pittsburgh which has the potential to take the Pittsburgh story to a whole new audience beyond Western PA. I am eager to see which Pittsburgh stories were selected for this film.

Check out the trailer here. I learned a few facts about Pittsburgh that I had not heard before…who knew Pittsburgh was the birth place of bingo?

You know how you hear about something and then it becomes one of those things that just keeps crossing your path. That is how I feel about Carl Kurlander‘s story of Pittsburgh. I first learned about Carl Kurlander from a chapter in the book, What Should I do With My Life, which I was reading on a plane ride to California a few Continue reading

Pittsburgh is about the Neighborhoods – A documentary about East Liberty

Chris Ivey is a Pittsburgh based filmmaker who has traveled around the world working on documentary films. Over the past 2 years he has been working on a film about East Liberty called East of Liberty. I had a chance to see some of the raw footage when Chris started working on this and in the past year he even shown the film in London. East of Liberty is a look at the stories and the people of East Liberty who aren’t usually the ones getting the media attention around some of the current development there. The Union Project is showing the film as part of their Monday conversation series about the neighborhood. I think this is well worth attending. I am including the details below the video clip. East of Liberty Part 2

Chris Ivey is an film maker who works on documentarys around the world, but calls Pittsburgh home.  Chris has been working on capturing the story of East Liberty for a few years now.  I was luck enough to catch a glimpse of some of the raw footage a year or so ago when Chris happened to bring his laptop into the Shadow Lounge.  There has been a lot of talk about East Liberty lately, especially with the new development there.  East of Liberty is a look at the stories of East Liberty and the neighbors that don’t often make the news.

Chapter 2 “The Fear of US” is a follow up to the first documentary that opened last year.  Part 1 has recieved much attention and was screened in London in May of 2007.

Film Fun: Children of the Corn

I have a thing for documentary films, I love them. Thus I am very interested in seeing this documentary, King Corn, at Pittsburgh Filmmakers this weekend. King Corn is the story of two friends who plant and grow an acre of corn in Iowa and try to follow their corn across the country to see where food comes from. I enjoyed (was terrified by) Fast Food Nation and I really really like corn, so I am looking forward to checking out this film. Continue reading
