International Beer Day: Guide to Pittsburgh breweries and more

Beer!

Even though today is International Beer Day, it’s a great chance to go local with these Pittsburgh businesses that know and love beer.

Brew Gentlemen
Coming soon to Braddock, this promising venture is a collaboration between two CMU grads. They’re working on getting a full production brewery set up, and are eventually planning to add a taproom and lounge. Even though it’s not open yet, it’s totally worth keeping an eye on!

Church Brew Works
While their beer is tasty and their food menu interesting, the most impressive thing about Church Brew Works is the building. Located inside an old church in Lawrenceville, the beautifully restored architecture steals the show as you sip on one of their award-winning beers.

Copper Kettle Brewing Company
This place is truly unique: as the only brew-on-premise in Pennsylvania, customers can use Copper Kettle’s equipment, ingredients, recipes, and expertise to brew and bottle their own beer. Perfect for people who may be intimidated by home brewing or simply don’t want to deal with the hassle, Copper Kettle is located in Greenfield as an extension of craft beer bar Hough’s.

East End Brewing Company
A small microbrewery, East End isn’t exactly a pub where you can sit down for a beer. However, you can fill up growlers of their delicious home brews at their daily growler hours, at both their brewery and in the Strip District at the Pittsburgh Public Market. You can also find many of their beers at your favorite bar or restaurant– check out this list of places that have dedicated a tap to East End beers.

Full Pint Brewing Company
Located in North Versailles, Full Pint is both a brewery and a pub. Go on a tour of the brewery or stop by for a pint or growler of one of their many craft beers, plus check out their newly launched food menu. Fellow Yinztern Ian wrote a great, more in-depth review of the pub.

PA Brew Tours
If you want to skip the hassle of organizing your own trip or designating a driver, then these beer tours are for you. They provide a ride to local breweries and pubs, a behind-the-scenes tour (when possible), and good food for the ride. Best of all, a portion of their profits is donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Penn Brewery
Penn BreweryModeled after the traditional beer gardens of Germany, Penn Brewery (aka the Pennsylvania Brewing Company) features craft beers, homemade food, and a historic setting. Oktoberfest in September is a roaring good time with music, dancing, German food, and, of course, tons of beer.

Rivertowne
With several restaurants located in and around Pittsburgh, Rivertowne sells lots of different beers including their own that they brew locally. You can check out any of their restaurants (which feature full menus), take a tour, or grab a six pack, case, or keg at the brewery.

South Hills Brewing Supply
Ready to tackle brewing your own beer at home? South Hills Brewing Supply has everything you need to get started with your first home brew, to perfect that recipe, or to get crazy with experimental beverages. It’s definitely your best bet in the Pittsburgh area for home brew supplies.

5 Reasons to Attend the Millvale Brewfest

Location of Millvale in Allegheny County

Image via Wikipedia

Just across the river from Lawrenceville, Millvale has got a ton of cool stuff going on:

  • New Sun Rising – a non profit organization that is supporting and funding more community projects in Millvale
  • The Saxifrage School – an innovative project that is getting started in a Millvale storefront to rethink college educations
  • Millvale Community Library – Millvale doesn’t have a library so the community is working to set one up.

You can drink beer and support Millvale this weeked at their annual Brew Fest.  The Millvale Brew Fest celebrates their 5th annual festival Saturday, August 13, 2011.  The Millvale brewfest is almost as old as IheartPGH and we can’t believe it has been 5 years since we blogged about the first festival.  We have attended some of the past festivals and it is a lovely way to spend an August afternoon.  One of the great things about this festival is that many members of the community come out to volunteer to make sure it is a success.  In the past the atmosphere of this festival has been super laid back, lots of nice people supporting Millvale.

In honor of the 5th anniversay here are 5 reasons why we think this is a great way to spend your Saturday:

1. Waterfront Refreshment

This is the only beer fest we know about that is held right next to the river.  The Millvale Brew Fest takes place at the Millvale riverfront park

2. Affordable Beer Festival Fun

Tickets for the Millvale Brew Fest are just $30 and available online here.  Designated Driver tickets are $12.  $30 is a steal compared to the price of some other popular Pittsburgh fall beer festivals.

3. Awesome Brew Festival Poster

We are about to hunt down one of these for the wall.  Designed by Millvale resident Tom Walker (who is also known as the guy who kayaks to his office in the Strip District).  Tom has been designing the brew fest posters for a few years.

4. It’s for a Good Cause.

The proceeds from the Millvale Brew Fest go to support the Nonprofit Millvale Borough Development Corporation and Millvale Main Street stabilize, revitalize and rejuvenate Millvale’s neighborhoods, through the development of housing, and businesses (and support the awesome projects listed above too).

5. Local Beer

While there are ton of breweries who will be at the fest or will have their beers served by a local distributor.  There are also a number of local brewers who will be there too – East End Brewing, Church Brew Works, Full Pint Brewing are just a few  of the confirmed breweries.

New Monthly Beer Tasting at The Warhol

Beer ChurchThis is a nice twist on an already great idea. Big Burrito has been hosting wine tastings at the Warhol for years. They are spicing things up a bit with new beer tastings. Even better they are kicking off this new event with the folks from Church Brew Works. My friends from New York City came to Pittsburgh last weekend – one of our many stops on Saturday was the Church Brew Works which they now call the beer church. I am a fan of the beerimisu event if our server said it wasn’t made with beer. Beer tasting and beer prizes – this is a great idea for happy hour!

Friday, March 14, 2008, 5:30 and 7:30 PM

Join The Warhol and big Burrito as we kick off a new series of Good Friday events.

On the second Friday of every month, a regional microbrewery will be presented by the brewers themselves or their distributors. The ticket price includes a smattering of beer snacks and full admission to the museum.

The beer tastings kick off on March 14. Meet the Church Brew Works Brewer Brant Dubovich and Tony “The Beerman” Knipling, Specialty Brand Manager of Vecenie Distributing. On exhibit for the evening will be Celestial Gold Pilsner, Pipe Organ Pale Ale, Pious Monk Dunkel and ThunderHop IPA. Church Brew Works prizes will also be given out to lucky participants.

JOIN THE WHISKEY REBELLION II!

This just in from our friends at Harris Grill (and yes they are rebuilding and will reopen).  I think few people realize that the original whiskey rebellion started right here in Western, PA (check out the entire history here).  I don’t usually post political things on this website, however the people organizing this event are some big Pittsburgh lovers.  I have great respect for many of the businesses hosting this event, they are local businesses that continue to donate their time, energy and money to many organizations in the Pittsburgh area.

JOIN THE WHISKEY REBELLION II!

In 1794, the people of Western Pennsylvania banded together to fight against an unfair and counterproductive tax on whiskey. In 2008, farsighted voting Americans in Allegheny County have united to demand the repeal of the unfair and counterproductive 10% Drink Tax. Friends Against Counterproductive Taxation (FACT) has been on the forefront of the fight against this tax, and has to date spent hundred of hours and thousands of dollars opposing the Drink Tax. While the Drink Tax has been passed into law, FACT continues the fight to repeal the tax in the courts and through the political process. This is the Kick off Party for Whiskey Rebellion II, and like those citizens of long ago, FACT and its members and allies will not quit and will not go away until the political leaders of Allegheny County listen to their voices!
