Congratulations on 100 batches of Beer

From our favorite Pittsburgh brewer’s newsletter – East End Brewing is on their 100th batch of beer…

ANOTHER MILESTONE REACHED: EAST END BREWING BREWS UP BATCH #100!!!
Ah yes, I remember it was just about a year and a half ago when I was
pouring the results of batch #2 from East End Brewing for so many of
you to taste that snowy night at Kelly’s. (Batch #1 was a
mind-numbingly bitter but otherwise tasty batch of Big Hop…not quite
ready for prime time though). Well, 99 batches later I’m still here,
still making beer, and it’s even gotten a bit easier with each batch
now that I know a bit more about what I’m doing. Hopefully the
beer’s gotten a bit better in the last year and a half too! So, what
to do for the big event – batch 100? Well, let’s just say that I
couldn’t let it go by without doing something unusual….

I was reading an article in one of the regional beer publications a
while back, about some American Brewers traveling to Belgium and their
participation in a beer that was a cross between a Belgian Tripel (or
“Triple” depending on your preference) and the much newer Imperial
IPA/Double IPA style. Immediately fascinated by the notion of a beer
that blends the light body and Belgian character of the tripel, with
the completely American over the top hoppiness of these huge IPAs, I
decided to seek one out and taste it for myself. As it turned out, the
idea was more interesting than the beer that I eventually got my hands
on, so I decided to give it a go here to see if I could MAKE the beer I
was imagining in my head – and what better time to do it than for #100!

Cool Larryville Gallery

I never thought that I would see so many galleries spring up in Lawrenceville. Over the last several years, many have come and gone. But a recent addition to the galleries in Lawrenceville has probably become my favorite.

Digging Pitt Gallery, located on Butler Street, has a unique and unpretentious air. The work is consistently good, ranging from the truly bizarre to the deeply beautiful. As the past year has come and gone, I have found some of my favorite artists on display.

When you walk into the gallery you get such a sense of discovery, with a feeling that there are no wrong choices. Sometimes, the walls will be covered with unframed drawings, showing rough edges, masterpieces pinned to the wall. At other times, sophisticated drawings and complex prints share the wall space.

The gallery itself is dominated by large flat files, the drawers of which contain folios of carefully stored artwork. Perusing the collection of artwork gives one a sense of discovery, delving into unknown depths in search of some hidden gem.

The gallery was started by John Morris, who moved here from New York in 2004 with the express purpose of opening a gallery. Digging Pitt is modeled after the Pierogi Gallery, located in Brooklyn. Digging Pitt, much like the Pierogi gallery, brings a wide range of works from a vast array of artists, into one small area.

Anyway, check out Digging Pitt. The website and the blog!

Traditional fuel. It’s…

Bad for the environment.

A foreign-relations headache.

And getting much more expensive.

But what are our other options?

Join us for a Goodbye Party for the Mon-Fayette Toll Road, in the heart of Braddock, through which the road would heartlessly raze. We’ll gather at Mayor John Fetterman’s front yard (or the First Presbyterian Church next door near the corner of Braddock & Library, should it rain) for a potluck and lively conversation (8:00 p.m.) That means you should bring some food or snacks to share, and bring your own drinks. We’ll have the basics. There will be an outdoor pottery firing going on at the Carnegie Library (if you want to, for example, burn some Turnpike Commission literature).

When night falls, we’ll process to the Ohringer Building (640 Braddock Ave.) for the unveiling of an art installation (writ large: NOMFX) and a major announcement about the Toll Road you won’t want to miss! We may even pass the hat a little: we need to start the Toll Road Retirement Fund.

Let’s rally. Let’s party. Let’s kiss the Toll Road goodbye!

This FRIDAY July 21, 8:00 pm
