  • Hack Pittsburgh – HackPittsburgh is a non-profit, community-based workshop that allows members to come together and share skills & tools to pursue creative projects. Our membership is open to everyone but typically comprises inventors, engineers, scientists, programmers, hobbyists, artists, roboteers, families, entrepreneurs, and arts and crafts enthusiasts. Our focus is on collaboration, education, and community outreach. We’re a benevolent group and do not promote or condone illegal activities. The term “hacking” is used in a benign sense, in the context of deconstructing and understanding objects and systems and re-purposing existing materials for new and innovative uses.
  • SUGAR boutique is now blogging – Sugar boutique – located on Butler Street in Lawrenceville – now has a blog and a twitter account. The blog has some great posts about the shop and the new items that are being added to the shop. I love when businesses can share the stories behind what they are selling.
  • Soon you will be able to rent bikes at South Side Works! – Golden Triangle Bike Rental, in its third year of operation along Downtown’s Eliza Furnace Trail, is opening a second location in the Works’ Town Square area;

Random Acts of Pittsburgh Kindness

Kiva Fellowship: From Pittsburgh to the Phillipines (with a few stops in between)

One of the blogs that I have recently stumbled across from an email exchange about the upcoming Netroot Nation is The Causemopolitain – which is a great blog about Sloane’s Kiva fellowship in the Phillipines. Yes, that Kiva, the micro lending site that Oprah has talked about where you can support small businesses from around the globe. Sloane is originally from Pittsburgh – and we actually went to grade school together way back when.  If you have any interest in social entrepreneurship and the Kiva process – you should definitely check out The Causemopolitain.

Mexico Mission Trip

I have been following the blog With love from Pittsburgh for awhile now – with a name like that how could I not follow along.   Laura wrote a nice post last week about her boyfriends mission trip to Mexico – I was about to head back and make a donation but it looks like he has successfully completed his fundraising for the trip.  Laura – please leave a comment if there are other things people can do to help!

Pittsburgh is for 2nd Homes and Historic Grocery Stores

Null Space, Chris Briem’s blog with lots of interesting info – often about Pittsburgh, links to this blog post from Otherstream – a blog from a North Carolina resident who has just purchased a 2nd home here in Pittsburgh – mostly just because he loves Pittsburgh.  I wanted to share an excerpt of his post Why Pittsburgh…

So now on to the bigger and more interesting question of why I would consider a place like Pittsburgh, and how I could assume I might like it better there than, say, San Francisco, given all the relief I felt upon living that particular urban area. It’s a valid question, and it’s one that even my husband asked me at one point.

Pittsburgh gives me that “urban” that I crave. I fell in love with the city on my first visit in 1997, and I love it a little more each time I visit. Unlike most sunbelt “boom towns”, the texture is decidedly urban, with a diversity of building types, people, and incomes. Unlike San Francisco and other “sophisticated urban areas” , the mood is neither expensive nor pretentious. And unlike such rust belt icons as Cleveland and Detroit, there’s an actual economy; in fact, Pittsburgh has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country.

Otherstream has some more great posts about Pittsburgh.  The author also writes a blog about old grocery stores, Groceteria.com, which is very well put together website with tons of interesting information.  There are even some pictures of some Pittsburgh grocery stores on the site – SureSave in Bloomfield, Swartz’s on Carson Street, and Breakers in Dormont.
