Open Houses

Sunday, September 9th, is the Mexican War Streets House and Garden Tour.  Here is your chance to check out the North Side and take a peek inside some of the houses and gardens that have been lovingly rehabbed and restored. There are 14 houses on the self-guided tour. There will also be food available from an assortment of local restaurants.

Looking for some Pittsburgh wisdom

I am looking for some ideas of wise Pittbsurgh sayings for t-shirts and other gift items. At Spreadshirt we are setting up a shop, Washable Wisdom, that sells t-shirts, hats, aprons and other items with wise sayings. Last week I was, once again, talking about how great Pittsburgh is, so we want to add a section to the shop for local wisdom. Of course, since Spreadshirt is in Pittsburgh, we will start with Pittsburgh. Does anyone know of any wise sayings that refer to Pittsburgh? Or any quotes of wisdom from famous Pittsburghers? Please share.

The PG is looking for your t-shirt stories

I saw this little post on the website for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette today. I thought this might be of interest to some of our blog readers. I am not sure if they are only looking for Pittsburgh stories or for stories from all over. I think I might submit my story about myIheartPGH t-shirt. I am looking forward to reading this article when it comes out.

Seeking Your Help: Your favorite T-shirt
Wednesday, January 17, 2007
Every favorite T-shirt usually comes a with good story on why it’s so special to you. Maybe you were wearing it when you met your future spouse. Or you got it at the best concert you ever attended. Or it’s from a special reunion. No matter how old or how tattered, you’ll never give it away. We’d like to hear your stories about your favorite T-shirts. Please send your reflections to Virginia Linn at vlinn@post-gazette.com. Include your name, home town and daytime phone number.

PGH Trivia: Hill Street Blues

I was reading this article today from Bloomberg.com about liens on property in Pittsburgh, how much money is being made and how this complicates redevelopment.  Fun stuff, not so much (It is important stuff though and I reccomend you take a look at the article).  I learned this fun fact from the article – the Hill district was the inspiration for Hill Street Blues.  I did a double take and then went to check this out on Wikipedia (there is some amazing stuff on there).

The name of the show was based on Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Chief writer Steven Bochco attended college at the nearby Carnegie Institute of Technology and used the downtrodden Hill District as inspiration for naming the show.

The Wikipedia also has a page on the Hill District.

The De-”h”-ification of Pittsburgh???

“We’ve got Fort Pitt. We made it (Pittsburgh) grow, it’s a wonderful place now, and you took away our h. Who the h*** are you”?

Ever look at old maps, from around the turn of the last century, and wonder where our h went? Well, I don’t know if many of you iheart-ers know this story, but I heard this on morning today. Thought I’d share (go 2 mins into the radio stream if you don’t want to hear the setup). Btw, Roger Kruwlich is a great storyteller if you’re interested in listening to his other pieces.
