The De-”h”-ification of Pittsburgh???

“We’ve got Fort Pitt. We made it (Pittsburgh) grow, it’s a wonderful place now, and you took away our h. Who the h*** are you”? Ever look at old maps, from around the turn of the last century, and wonder where our h went? Well, I don’t know if many of you iheart-ers know this story, but I heard this on morning today. I’ve been a volunteer for the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix for close to 15 years. As such, I’m a little surprised how few Pittsburghers know about this event, or the draw it creates both nationally and internationally. Often, it seems those outside our city know more than those inside. Started in 1983, the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix raises money for the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and Allegheny Valley School. It has slowly grown from a 1-day set of races to a 10-day festival at various locations in southwestern PA and second in size only to the Regatta. Some fun/unknown facts… Read the rest

Several years ago, I was a bike geek. 50 to 80-mile Saturday rides were typical, and I’d race across the city – after work – to meet my riding buddy for a weeknight sprint of 20 miles or so. While most of those rides were on the country roads of Westmoreland County, we also spent a lot of time on the vast array of rail-trails at our disposal. Southwestern PA is blessed in this regard.
