Greek Food is Good Food

It is the most wonderful time of the year in Pittsburgh, and I am talking about more than the weather. It is time for the annual Saint Nicholas Greek Food Festival of deliciousness. I heart ethnic food festivals as much as I heart PGH. These food festivals are the big part of what make Pittsburgh great – people volunteering their time, to benefit their communities and to serve really great food.

St. Nicks is probably the biggest and tastiest of the food festivals in the area. There is often a line, but it is worth the wait. There is seating in the very large gymnasium and under the tent outside which is right on Forbes Avenue, just across from the Carnegie Museum of Art.

As if the food was not reason enoug to attend, you could run into your favorite Steeler.  From The Burgh Blog -Troy Palamalu attended the Greek Food Festival last year.

The Festival runs Sunday May 4 to May 9, 2008. More details, a menu and pick up order form are available here.

Festival Hours:
Sunday:
Noon to 8:00 PM

Monday – Thursday:
Lunch: 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Dinner: 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Friday:
Lunch: 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Dinner: 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM

New Monthly Beer Tasting at The Warhol

Beer ChurchThis is a nice twist on an already great idea. Big Burrito has been hosting wine tastings at the Warhol for years. They are spicing things up a bit with new beer tastings. Even better they are kicking off this new event with the folks from Church Brew Works. My friends from New York City came to Pittsburgh last weekend – one of our many stops on Saturday was the Church Brew Works which they now call the beer church. I am a fan of the beerimisu event if our server said it wasn’t made with beer. Beer tasting and beer prizes – this is a great idea for happy hour!

Friday, March 14, 2008, 5:30 and 7:30 PM

Join The Warhol and big Burrito as we kick off a new series of Good Friday events.

On the second Friday of every month, a regional microbrewery will be presented by the brewers themselves or their distributors. The ticket price includes a smattering of beer snacks and full admission to the museum.

The beer tastings kick off on March 14. Meet the Church Brew Works Brewer Brant Dubovich and Tony “The Beerman” Knipling, Specialty Brand Manager of Vecenie Distributing. On exhibit for the evening will be Celestial Gold Pilsner, Pipe Organ Pale Ale, Pious Monk Dunkel and ThunderHop IPA. Church Brew Works prizes will also be given out to lucky participants.

Fish Fry Season – who has the best fish fry in Pittsburgh?

While I was not raised Catholic, I have come to appreciate the tasty annual tradition of the Fish Fry.  Friday, February 8 marks the start of the annual fish fry season.  Luckily, the Pittsburgh Catholic Newspaper has a complete list of local fish fries.  So, I am on a quest to find out who has the best fried fish in Pittsburgh – please share your favorites – I would like to try to feature a different fish fry each week.

Check out the Post-Gazette’s article on Fish Fries here.

New Guild Studio’s Holiday Open House

I was already going to post about this event because anything that is happening in Braddock is usually worth a visit. So when I received this email from the Deputy Mayor of Braddock I knew it would be worth a look. A chance to do some holiday shopping in Braddock (and not the mall) in another plus.
I then looked up the website for New Guild Studios – www.newguildstudio.com
New Guild Studio is definitly worth a visit – they specialize in religious art – restoration or construction of some large scale pieces.

I have always wondered who works on these types of things, especially after a visit to St. Nicholas Church – if you haven’t stopped in there yet – the murals are AMAZING.

New Guild Studio Holiday Open House
