The New Hazlett TheaterThe New Hazlett Theater is located on the North Side next to the Children’s Museum used to be home to the Pittsburgh Public Theater.  I remember some field trips to the Public Theater when it was located on the North Side – I am pretty sure we went to see “I Do! I Do!” and “Dancing at Lughnasa”.   I  reviewed the Public Theaters Production history to double check this and I have no idea why someone would take a class of middle school kids to see a play about marriage. What theater field trips do  you remember – leave a comment below. Continue reading

A. B. C. Always Be Closing – Glengarry Glen Ross @ New Hazlett Theater

glengarry

My apologies to the folks at Barebones Productions for not writing about this sooner – I have been looking forward to this play for a few months.  In college I read and reread this play for two, if not three different classes.  And as I have worked in more jobs and visited more real estate delevopments I continue to think of some of the lines from Glengarry Glen Ross.

You still have 2 more chances to see Barebone’s Productions Glengarry Glen Ross at the New Hazlett Theater on the North Side.

Saturday, November 28, 2009 – 8pm
Sunday, November 29, 2009 – 2pm

Check out some of the reviews:

  • Trib Live: “Artistic director Patrick Jordan stages a play only when he has something to say and a play he loves.”
  • Pittsburgh City Paper: “The production looks great, from the garish Chinese restaurant of the first act to the ramshackle office of the second act. (Gotta love the obviously fake wood paneling that just screams “sleaze.”)”

Arts Festival Pick: Take Me Out

I have been waiting for the Arts Festival to kick off because there are some great things happening at the festival this year.  Pittsburgh based theater group and friend of Iheart PGH, Barebones Productions  is bringing what is sure to be an interesting theater presentation to the festival – Take Me Out.  The play Take Me Out is the story of a baseball player who announces he is gay.  Barebones has brought some other great plays to town in the past few years – (click here to see some past blog posts about Barebones Productions).  I have had the opportunity to talk with Barebones founder and I know they have recruited some top notch actors for this performance.  I think this play will be a really interesting look at another side of sports that isn’t often seen.

I went to the theater and a fight broke out

So just when I think we may be starting to hit a midwinter lull in activities, let me qualify that by saying that a lull means there are like 3 less cool things to do each week in Pittsburgh – I get an email about this awesome theater production.

I am not going to lie, I am personally not crazy about the theater, I like theater, but it rarely makes the top of my list – mostly because I don’t like sitting still for 2 hours straight.

I think this is a production I can really get into –

Pandora’s Box Theater & Eclectic Mayhem presents A Night at the Fights

From Macbeth vs. Macduff, Cyrano vs. Valvert, and Peter Pan vs. Captain Hook, to some of the greatest fights you’ve never heard of, a talented cast of local combat aficionados will entertain by re-enacting thirteen illustrious conflicts from the theatrical repertoire.

One performance of all of the best fight scenes. Awesome.

What is Eclectic Mayhem? I was wondering the same thing – according to their website – they are experts in stage combat based in Pittsburgh – “since we are based in Pittsburgh, pirates are a specialty!”

Eclectic Mayhem consists of Tonya Lynn and Adam Rutledge, theater artists with over a decade of combined experience in Stage Combat performance and choreography. Both are affiliated with the Society of American Fight Directors and the United Stuntmen’s Association.

Who knew there was a society of American Fight Directors and a United Stuntmen’s Association – I love that there is an association for everything.  Once for work I had to contact the  Pickle Packers International – their website is IlovePickles.org.

A Night at the Fights

Sunday, February 17 @ 4pm & 9pm
At the Studio Theatre in the basement of the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning in Oakland

Pittsburgh: The Opera

I saw a flyer for this at the Union Project today – when I first looked at the flyer I thought it might be along the lines

of MTV’s Carmen: A Hip Hopera – which was popular a few years back. But Pittsburgh: The Opera looks even better. This is way more than opera – video, interviews, puppet show, dance and more.

Pittsburgh: The Opera sold out last year and is back for a repeat performance this weekend at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater. This is a multimedia experience from the folks at Squonk Opera, a world famous performance group that started with their first performance in the Pittsburgh junk yard in 1992. Continue reading
