Party in Market Square – Stay and Play Every Friday

Many years ago back in the days before digital photography (check out the comment on this message board from 1999) there was a weekly party in Market Square – “M-Squared” and I am told, it was good. Well the good times are back. PUMP (the group for anyone young and young thinking in Pittsburgh) has been hard at work to bring the party back to Market Square. Stay & Play Fridays are designed to get you to stay downtown and play, every Friday evening in Market Square. Every Friday, May 23rd – August 1st, 5:00pm – 9:00pm

This Friday:

5:00pm-6:30pm – CK9 and the Old E Allstars
6:30pm-7:30pm – Strangeway
7:30pm-9:00pm – The Takeover UK

Not to be Missed! – Bach Choir of Pittsburgh presents ‘The Promise of Freedom’

Bach Choir of Pittsburgh, under the baton of Artistic Director Thomas Wesley Douglas, continues its 74th season with a not to be missed concert that examines the power of oppression and focuses on ‘The Promise of Freedom’. The concert features the Ambridge Area High School Steel Drum Band, Todd Hartman, Director. Throughout history, music has emerged from those in servitude and slavery. The traditional spiritual, music from concentration camps, even the reggae of Bob Marley, all combine to form a body of musical literature that speaks from the heart and soul of the oppressed. The Choir presents a concert of music that finds hope in the sorrow of servile circumstance.

Saturday, May 10, 8:00 pm
Sunday, May 11, 4:00 pm
East Liberty Presbyterian Church – 116 S. Highland Ave.

Tickets range in price from $10 to $25 and are on sale now from ProArts Ticket Service at 412-394-3353 or at http://www.proartstickets.org. Discounts are available to groups of 10 or more. Tickets will be also be available at the door.

The Museum of the Mixtape

Not only is this a great idea for an art exhibit, but I get to blog about a museum that I have not even been to yet and I get to talk about my favorite audio tape.

The Tom Museum is puppet maker Tom Sarver’s museum on the North Side. On Friday April 11, 2008 the Tom Museum opens a new exhibition MIXTAPE which is all about – the mix tape. Which is just a totally great idea. Mix tapes are such an interesting look at musical tastes and points in time. In the movie High Fidelity – John Cusack’s character spends quite a bit of time talking about how to put together the perfect mix tape.

I love the idea of a museum exhibit of these little tiny tapes of personal art. I found this event on Pop City Media’s weekly events round up – Pop Filter and they provide a link to this website – www.artofthemix.org – which is dedicated to mix tapes.

MIXTAPE
April 11 to
The Tom Museum, 410 Sampsonia Way on the North Side
The Tom Museum is open Saturdays from noon until 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m
