Great Lake Swimmers at Schenley Plaza

With any luck these mid-afternoon showers will subside in time for the WYEP Final Friday Concert tonight at Schenley Plaza.

The free concert begins at 7pm under the tent and features the Canadian band Great Lake Swimmers. The most notable aspect of this contemplative folk outfit is the haunting vocals of frontman Tony Dekker — watch his NPR Tiny Desk Concert from June to see what I mean.

For more information about other similar music events, check out WYEP.org. Information about events in Schenley Plaza and Pittsburgh’s other major parks can be found at the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy.

Reservoir of Jazz @ the Highland Park Reservoir – Every Sunday in August

Another great FREE activity for your Sunday evenings. There is a great dedicated community group, I should say groups in Highland Park and the park and the surrounding areas just keep getting better. Enrico’s Tazzo D’Oro is just a few blocks from the park and rumor has it that Point Brugge will be opening a second location in Highland Park in the near future.  Sundays in August 5-7pm.

The burg larry McGee

THE BURGH STANDS FOR VICTORY!

Last month I made it to the end of Viper Soul Club at the Shadow Lounge and one of the last songs of the evening was about Pittsburgh but I wasn’t able to get all of the details from DJ Juddy about this Pittsburgh song.

The burg larry McGeeWell this video popped up on YouTube today – with the entire song and a great slide show of phoos from Vipers Soul Club in January.  The lyrics seem quite fitting for today too.

The song is “The Burg” by Larry McGee was origionally released in 1976 by the label Boogie Band Records and was reissued in 2005 by Licorice Soul Records.  You can purchase an origional copy of this record for $200 here.

You can check out Larry McGee’s MySpace page here.

Pittsburgh Native and Champion Whistler to Perform with Edgewood Symphony on Sat

You should go to see the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra this weekend to see one of the champions of the Pittsburgh region perform. Sean Lomax who is originally from Braddock but now travels extensively as a whistler. Sean Lomax is a champion whistler he performs with Cirque du Soleil and was named male entertainer of the year for 2009 by the International Whistling Convention.

Mr. Lomax will join the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra on Saturday night…

Mr. Lomax, 49, of Braddock isn’t a singer and won’t be playing an instrument. Instead, he will perform three classical numbers using a skill he describes as “a lost art” — whistling.

Rhyme Calesthenics 6 – The Wheel of Hip Hop

UPDATE – This event is May 15 – NOT May 8 – my error – I was so excited for Rhyme Cal – I didn’t want to wait a week.

This event comes highly reccomended to me by a number of IheartPGH readers.

Rhyme Calisthenics is an MC competition that combines the intensity of a rap battle with the excitement and unpredictability of a game show. While rap battles only require one skill – the ability to diss one’s opponent – Rhyme Calisthenics is the true test of an MC’s versatility, creativity and swagger.

They even have a fan who drove in from Ohio to check out Rhyme Cal last fall.
