Knit and Crochet Festival & The Pittsburgh Crochet Cape

All the cool kids are knitting these days. Thank goodness, I have actually been knitting since I was 10 but now all of my friends have asked for knitting lessons. I attended this event last year – if you like visiting one of Pittsburgh’s local knitting shop then you will love this festival. The Pittsburgh Knit & Crochet festival is a ball of fun. 30+ vendors selling all sorts of yarn and supplies. People are spinning yarns and making all sorts of cool stuff.

Fun Fact: Festival Coordinator – Barbara Grossman, wife of former Steeler Randy Grossman

Here are some pictures I took last year – The Pittsburgh Crochet Group created the Pittsburgh Cape – an elaborate cape depicting scenes and icons of Pittsburgh- yes they crocheted a jar of pickles in the right hand picture. This group and many local knitters and crocheters make and donate tons of items to local hospitals and charities.

Fish Fry Season – who has the best fish fry in Pittsburgh?

While I was not raised Catholic, I have come to appreciate the tasty annual tradition of the Fish Fry.  Friday, February 8 marks the start of the annual fish fry season.  Luckily, the Pittsburgh Catholic Newspaper has a complete list of local fish fries.  So, I am on a quest to find out who has the best fried fish in Pittsburgh – please share your favorites – I would like to try to feature a different fish fry each week.

Check out the Post-Gazette’s article on Fish Fries here.

JOIN THE WHISKEY REBELLION II!

This just in from our friends at Harris Grill (and yes they are rebuilding and will reopen).  I think few people realize that the original whiskey rebellion started right here in Western, PA (check out the entire history here).  I don’t usually post political things on this website, however the people organizing this event are some big Pittsburgh lovers.  I have great respect for many of the businesses hosting this event, they are local businesses that continue to donate their time, energy and money to many organizations in the Pittsburgh area.

JOIN THE WHISKEY REBELLION II!

In 1794, the people of Western Pennsylvania banded together to fight against an unfair and counterproductive tax on whiskey. In 2008, farsighted voting Americans in Allegheny County have united to demand the repeal of the unfair and counterproductive 10% Drink Tax. Friends Against Counterproductive Taxation (FACT) has been on the forefront of the fight against this tax, and has to date spent hundred of hours and thousands of dollars opposing the Drink Tax. While the Drink Tax has been passed into law, FACT continues the fight to repeal the tax in the courts and through the political process. This is the Kick off Party for Whiskey Rebellion II, and like those citizens of long ago, FACT and its members and allies will not quit and will not go away until the political leaders of Allegheny County listen to their voices!
