AOL’s Rented Spaces – “Insiders’ Tips on Top Housing Markets” – March 5, 2010 by Katie McCaskey

Pittsburgh

Searching for a hot neighborhood in the Steel City? Popular Pittsburgh blogger Lindsay Patross of IHeartPGH.com offers three recommendations: downtown adjacent East Liberty (recently profiled in The New York Times), South Side, and Mount Washington.

She recommends a few hangouts, too. The Shadow Lounge in East Liberty offers live music, poetry readings, and African dance, among other events. OTB Cafe (OTB Bicycle Cafe), located in the South Side mixes bikes, beer, and “bloody good food.” Redbeards Bar and Grill in Mount Washington, offers an outdoor patio and fans devoted to their chicken wings.Read up on the city before you move to Pittsburgh, or, to suss out where you’d like to live next. Patross recommends checking out local bloggers Joe and Betsy.com. She also recommends FoodBurgh and Franktuary for notes on the food scene and Should I Drink That for craft beer recommendations around the city.

(Check out more of Pittsburgh’s hot spots here.)

Top 3 Neighborhoods:Regent Square- Slightly bias because I live there, but Frick Park + D's + friendly/unique people = why RS is awesome! Though not a lot of people live there, I'd say the Strip District is my second favorite just because of the atmosphere and great vendors. It's the one place I have to take all of my out of town guests. Last, I'm going to agree with the South Side. Such a fun area with great shopping, bars, and restaurants. If only the parking situation was better… Favorite Blogs (other than IHeartPGH!):That's Church (me = minion of PittGirl)FoodBurghSecret Agent L

Regent Square! Lived there for 2 years in grad school and wish I had the money to have bought my house there! Simply AMAZING!

My favorite hoods are Lawrenceville, Oakland, and the South Side.Favorite Pgh blogs are That's Church, 2 Political Junkies, and IheartPGH.Honorable mention goes to ex-burgher Justin Kownacki.A question I have: what happened to OMGPittsburgh.com? It's a great concept and it's now broken and abandoned.

Greenfield is definitely at the top of my list. Some great local establishments (for example, Hough's), easy to get to anywhere, and one of the best community groups in town, Connect Greenfield (http://www.connectgreenfield.org).Another great one is Polish Hill. Both of these neighborhoods are still under the radar, very affordable and very convenient.
