Zippty Zipcar – get $25 in free driving

One of the other things I talked about on WDVE this am is the Zipcar low-car diet that just ended last week. Pittsburgh is one of the 50+ city that has Zipcars parked around town. Once you are a member, you can reserve a car online and drive it when you need it.

I know Pittsburgh is a driving town – but if you are a student and just need to use a car once in a while for a trip to the grocery store or Ikea – or maybe you have a car for your family but once in a while you need to use a pick up truck – Zipcar is the perfect solution. The hourly rate is about $10 and that includes gas AND insurance. Continue reading

Bar Tour Update! We are on our way!

JetBlue Tail (N556JB; "Betty Blue")
Image via Wikipedia

In less than 48 hours the IheartPGH community helped us raise the first $500 for the Steeler Bar Tour!! Thank you Pittsburgh! Thanks to a tip from a reader we learned that JetBlue ended the All-You-Can-Jet Promotion last night. We were able to purchase the tickets just before the promotion expired.

We still need some more sponsors for the tour and I have set up a new widget with ChipIn. Give $10 we will add your link to the blog roll, $25 gets you an IheartPGH t-shirt or tote, $30 we will blog about your blog/website/project/organization. Other ideas on how we can work together – please let us know!

Updated: the ChipIn widget just wasn’t working out.  We have now added a google checkout shopping cart to the site – check it out on the Support IheartPGH page.

Let the planning begin: We need your help to find the best Steelers bars we can get to for the month of September! Please keep spreading the word and leaving suggestions.

More Info about the National Steelers Bar Tour

I wanted to follow up to yesterday’s post about this project and share some more information about what we are hoping to do.

Where did this idea come from: IheartPGH was started as a joke back in September 2005 – I didn’t even know what a blog was when I set this little website up. In the past four years this blog has become more than a website and it has been amazing to see the community of people in Pittsburgh and around the country come together to share their favorites. One of the places where the Pittsburgh community is most visible is the Steeler Nation. I will admit that when I travel, I look up the closest Steeler bars – even if it isn’t football season – I even tried to convince my mom we should have dinner at the local Steelers bar in Venice, FL when we were visitng my grandparents for easter.

So last week I was booking a plane ticket to visit an old Pittsburgh friend and I noticed that JetBlue is running this promotion All-You-Can-Jet – for $599 you can travel as many times as you want in the month of September. So I have been talking about this idea with some friends and decided to see if there was any support for the project. I sent around some emails and got a good response from some friends. I put up the post and fundraising challenge yesterday to see if there was any interest in supporting a tour of Steelers bar – I never expected to get so much support so quickly.

Supporting the Project: I know there have been some questions about this – we are not a charity – just some bloggers hoping to put together a little project to visit some Steeler Bars around the country. There are lots of great non-profit projects out there that need your support, especially in this economy. So we have tried to come up with a way for you to help us raise some money for this trip in exchange to something of value – your link on the blog roll, an IheartPGH t-shirt or tote bag or a blog post about you/your organization. If there are other ways we can help you and you can support the project – please let us know.

Where Are You Going To Go?: I am not sure yet – I think the best way to figure this out is to ask the Steeler Nation and we have already recieved so many great Steeler Bar recommendations. Depending on costs – we will use the JetBlue Pass to fly to the furthest places. If things go well – hopefully we can continue to visit Steelers bars for the entire football season. There are already some offers for iron city beers in New York City.

Tracking the Tour: Of course, there will be blog posts, tweets and photos. Maybe this could become a book or a photo book. I would love to look at getting a better camera or if we can raise some more money bringing along a cameraman to make a documentary about the Steelers Bar.

UPDATE – We have raised the first $500 – THANK YOU PITTSBURGH LOVERS!!!! Visit the Support Page to learn how you can help support the tour!

PittGirl Revealed – Say hello to the blogger and her new website

I don’t usually blog this early in the morning, but I stopped by to see if anyone was tweeting about our National Steeler Bar Tour and I stumbled upon something a little more important than Steelers bar in the land of Pittsburgh pop culture. More important that Steelers Bars? Yep.  If you have been following the burgh blogosphere this is big –  I saw that @JanePitt had new avatar and at 7:05 am she posted a  link to a brand new website.

PittGirl aka JanePitt was the anonymous author of popular and hilarious blog – TheBurghBlog for over 3 years. IheartPGH has been a huge fan of JanePitt – I was interviewed by the Trib about her blog coverage of the super bowl.

The website has a new name ThatsChurch.com (don’t worry all of the Burgh Blog Archives are there) and JanePitt is now blogging under her real name Virginia Montanez.

I wasn’t sure what to write about all this but after reading the about page on ThatsChurch I wanted to make sure everyone saw the end paragraph…

I love Pittsburgh. If I could pick it up, wrap my arms around it, kiss it on the forehead and tell it I love it for all its faults, I so would.
