Help me build a Pittsburgh Summer List

Summer family jump

I am having a hard time getting my brain around the fact that summer is here.  I have been out of town for much of may – and it seems like spring just merged into summer.

I have also been inspired by reading some other works and I am thinking about a little blogging challenge for the summer.  I would like to compile a big list of things to do here in Pittsburgh this summer and blog my way through the list.  These things need not be expensive.  I have a few ideas but I wanted to see what you would put on this list.  I hope that many of you will join some of the fun too – would love to collaborate with other bloggers, photographers and Pittsburgh lovers on this!

Here are some ideas that came in from Twitter on Friday:

  • Plan a Tweetup at PNC park with Twittsburgh
  • Attend the Mattress Factory’s Urban Garden Party
  • Visit Paige’s Dairy Mart
  • Kayak with Kayak Pittsburgh (I thinking of setting a goal of miles to kayak)
  • Take a sewing class at Cut & Sew Studio
  • Attend an outdoor yoga class
  • Run some neighborhood 5ks – which ones?
  • Dine at Curry Away – just learned about this place and have heard great things!
  • Drive the entire Red Belt (how long would that take?)

A Few Short Votes Can Put PGH On the Twitter Map

Shorty Awards

Image via Wikipedia

Okay, Pittsburgh fans – we need to Pittsburgh on the Shorty Awards map.  The Shorty Awards are like the oscars of Twitter.  Each year they come up with a bunch of categories – and the winners are chosen by who gets the most votes.

This year I think we should create a Pgh category on the Shorty awards.

To nominate or vote for some one just post a tweet with the following info:

I nominate @TwitterUser for a Shorty Award in #PGH because [add reason here]

or

You can also send shorter votes like this: #shortyawards @username #PGH [add reason here].

You can always vote from ShortyAwards.com too.  Some things to keep in mind…

  • you must include a reason for your vote
  • you can only vote for one person/twitter user in a category – yes that means you will have to choose between Sally Wiggin Hair @sallywigginhair and Fake Julie Bologna @fakejulie and any of the other awesome Pittsburgh twitter users.

If we get enough votes on the Shorty Awards for category PGH – it could become an official category – if not maybe we can just plan our own PGHShortyAwards ceremony right here in Pittsburgh.

Also – while you are voting – we think you should cast a few votes for these Pittsburgh twitter users in the official categories

Twerrible Towel

Nope, that is not a spelling mistake – and if you are a long time reader you know that I was not an A+ student is spelling.  But Twerrible is the correct spelling in this case. Yes, the Twerrible Towel is the name of the twitter powered terrible towel.

We are still collecting all of the details about this – but it looks like the folks at McKinney – an advertising firm in Durham, NC – have built a twitter powered terrible towel.  Everytime some one posts a tweet with the hashtag #steelersnation – the motorized hand twirls the terrible towel.   They have hacked an old fan motor and hooked it up to a computer to bring the steelernation – what I imagine is the first ever – Twitter powered terrible towel.

Even better you can watch the Twerrible Towel live on Ustream – http://www.ustream.tv/twerribletowel – as of this blog post there have been 1132 twirls of the twerrible towel.

Tomorrow I will be a panelist for one of the sessions at the Pittsburgh Craft Collective’s  The Business of Craft workshop.I am sitting here at my computer putting together some links and ideas on how I use social media – blogs, facebook, twitter – for IheartPGH and some of the other projects I manage for work.  I thought it might be interesting to have a conversation here in the comments about how other Pittsburgh groups, businesses, blogs, non-profits are using online tools.  Continue reading
