The “Yinz”-ternship: Commonwealth Press, Knit the Bridge, Nathan’s Hot Dogs, and more

Note: Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are NOT IheartPGH interns

What is it that the interns at IheartPGH spend most of their time doing all week? Well, aside from writing posts and helping to develop the web and social media content of IheartPGH, we take field trips and get out of the office and into the ‘Burgh frequently to check out what’s happening!

Just in the past two weeks we stumbled upon the Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Contest in Pittsburgh (Market Square) for the regional qualifier for the 4th of July competition in Coney Island.

Appetites for hot dogs still intact, we headed to Franktuary downtown for some delish dogs.

Some of us even took a few tours of Techshop last week, learning all about the tools and projects housed there (look for upcoming posts on some of the exciting start-ups operating out of their space).

This past week we’ve done some really exciting stuff. On Monday, we took a trip down to the South Side to tour the “start-up accelerator” space, Alphalab, and met with some really awesome Pittsburgh entrepenuers. We also extensively toured and learned about the process of designing and printing at Commonwealth Press, and will mostly likely be working with them in creating and designing our new merchandise.

We also stopped to check out the Knit the Bridge project in which quilted railings and panels will be used to cover the Warhol Bridge. It’s a really amazing idea and there has been an outstanding amount of participation from the community.

A couple of us met with Brett from OnlyinPgh at Zeke’s to brainstorm and share ideas about a photo submission we’re thinking of starting here at IheartPGH since Brett has had a lot of valuable experience to share with us. Keep a lookout for photo submission contests as well and get snapping!

A lot of the times when we’re out taking these tours and seeing the really cool things going on in the Pittsburgh area, we’re taking pictures. Many of these pictures are posted on our Instagram, FOLLOW US! You can also stay up to date through our Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Here are some of the choice pictures from our past few “field trips”:

So where should the interns head next? What exciting and fun events are going on next week? Leave a comment, Facebook or Tweet us!

Merry Merry Christmas To You

My great Aunt Ruth used to just say Merry Merry.  We hope that you had a very Merry Christmas Day if you celebrate and continue to to enjoy the holidays for the rest of the week.  We saw this photo on Twitter at the beginning of December and I’ve been meaning to share this tweet and photo on the blog ever since (with the permission of the author).

We would love to see your Pittsburgh holiday photos too!  Please share in the comments below or on Twitter with the hashtag #yinzmas.

Sneak Peek at Station Street Hot Dogs

Twitter is all abuzz about the newest establishment to open in Pittsburgh.  Station Street Hot Dogs, located on Broad Street (kind of behind the new Target) in East Liberty, official opens today at 4pm.

We got a sneak peek at the place from Dave Lagnese (who is a super supporter of the neighborhood – stop by and say hello to him at the East Liberty Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings – he is the man behind the Kew Park coffee bar).

Here is his report on Station Street with a few photos…

Station Street Hot Dogs opened today at 5:00. I am happy to report that I was the first paying customer! I had a new york dog and a kimchi dog with an order of fries. All were excellent. The photos are of the menu board being chalked when I arrived about 10 to five. And Kevin preparing the first order (mine). He seemed to have the same intensity putting fixins on the dog as he does plating a dish at SALT. They told me the hours would be something like 11:30 am until 11:00 in the evening. Check it out and spread the word.

You can check out the entire menu at www.stationstreetpgh.com.  They have a great website – we aren’t sure who designed the site but we hope to track that down.  They also share some history of the place.  It is nice to see a local business getting an update.

Station Street is a hot dog shop in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. Opened in 1915 at the corner of Station Street and Larimer Avenue and relocated in 1969 to Broad Street, the shop was closed for several decades before being resurrected in 2006 by Bob and Ruth Tortorete. In February 2012, Station Street was reopened by brothers Kevin and Tom Sousa, and designer Jay Fanelli.

Would you buy a Pittsburgher a cup of coffee (or a beer)?

This evening, Aldo Coffee (which is located in Mt. Lebanaon) wrote a blog post  linking to this post on the blog Coffee Strategies – which is a blog that covers all sorts of interesting things about the coffee business.

Coffee Strategies writes about Jonthan’s Card (http://jonathanstark.com/card/) – an image of Starbuck’s gift card that Jonathan Stark uploaded to the internet.  The card is there for people to download to their phones to use to buy a cofee or to add money to so that other people can use.  You can follow the balance of the card via @jonathanscard on Twitter. [The only video I can find about this is from Jamie aka @JTYourFace who is  an enthusiastic social media lover/YouTuber.  You can check out her run down on the Jonathan Card here).]

The Coffee Strategies post suggests that Jonathan’s Card is not just a social experiment but more of a covert Starbucks promotion.  You can read all of the details and see the screenshots on the Coffee Strategies post here.   It looks like Stark launched this project back on July 14, 2011.  But the project has recently been getting a ton of buzz around the internet – CNN, Make, Laughing Squid, Tech Crunch.

There are some interesting comments on the blog posts about this project.  Will people give and take or will people just take and the card balance will be zero.  So far that hasn’t been the case.

Buy-A-Burgher-A-Beer App?

Reading some of the posts on the Aldo Coffee blog  – there was one post last week that is no long up about the price of coffee and recently the knitting shop, Naturally Stitches, wrote a post kindly explaining some of their price increases — led me to think about what this type of project might look like if it was just a Pittsburgh project.  Could we create something like this that could only be used at local coffee shops?  Could it be set up as a fundraiser – maybe match the dollars added to the card with a donation to a local non-profit?

The app Gifi lets you leave a gift for a friend the next time they check-in to a place on Foursquare (I am not sure if Gifi still works their blog hasn’t been updated since 2010).  I know there are apps that let you send gifts to friends – like Giiv.  Starbucks and Pepsi have apps where you can send a drink to a friend.  The beer tracking app Beerby was developed here in Pittsburgh by Levlr.

What should a Pittsburgh-buy-a-cup-of-coffee-for-a-stranger app look like?  Since this is Pittsburgh, maybe it should be a buy-a-beer-for-a-stranger app.  Would people use it? Any app developers out there who would want to make a Pittsburgh app?
