Austin Band with a Hometown Connection

The Asylum Street Spankers, an Austin, Texas based Band with a Pittsburgh connection (one of the band members is married to a local gal) will be preforming at Diesel on Saturday night – doors open at 6pm.

Founded thirteen years ago at a booze and hallucinogen-fueled party at the Dabbs Hotel along the river in Llano, Texas, the Asylum Street Spankers stand as one of America’s most distinctive groups. Defiantly acoustic, fiercely independent and absurdly good, the Spankers have been led by founders Christina Marrs and Wammo from being a country-blues revival act playing happy hours in Austin, through nearly 40 musicians, endless touring and constant evolution to being an internationally reknowned underground institution. Fueled by an ethos born of their punk roots, Marrs and Wammo have built their lives around making unique music that surprises and entertains.

Last week I mentioned the local Scrabble clubs. I am happy to help Pittsburgh find fun ways to work on increasing our vocabulary. So I was very happy to get an email from the folks at the Lava Lounge about Spelling Bee Mondays.

Not only will there be a spelling bee, but you get these exciting specials…

  • $1.00 Meatball Sandwiches – Veggie/Meat (5PM-12AM)
  • 1.50 Glasses of Boxed Wine
  • $1.25 16oz. Pabst Drafts

Pretzel Love

I have been posting some reviews of Pittsburgh places over on Yelp! (I think everyone else should leave their reviews and pictures there too). I know I have blogged about my love for the Pretzel shop before but I am going to share it again. I stopped in this morning and I love this place! This is a picture of a bag of fresh pretzels that I picked up this morning.

This is THE BEST place to eat in Pittsburgh. I wish I could give this place 10 stars. I love pretzels! I love this place. I love that they won’t wait on you if you are talking on your cell phone. I love that lunch is less than $3.
My second favorite food to pretzels is probably rice krispie treats – and they sell those too. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!! I am adding some pictures of fresh pretzels!

WhereTheMusicMatters.com

WYEP has a new website – WYEP.org. It is one good looking new website. I hope that someday IheartPGH looks half as good as this!
Another great thing is that they have a little tag line at the bottom – The first green station in the nation. Awesome. Make sure you check out the history page – WYEP is a great independent radio station with a great story. To go from a basement in Oakland to the first green station in the nation is great. Congrats to WYEP on a great new website.

Get Out Your Santa Suit!

December 8 is Santaarchy 2007. I love this event. Natalia post this event on IheartPGH way way back in 2005 (2 years seems like a long time in blog time). I am always thrilled to see it return each year.

A while back a group of people in San Francisco went out drinking dressed in Santa Suits. Thus began Santarchy. Now people all over the world get together for an evening (or afternoon) of drinking dressed as Santa. It is Santa fun for grown ups. And yes there are Santarchy’s all over the world. Check out the calendar located at Santarchy.com – on December 8 – there will be Santarchy’s in
*PITTSBURGH, PA, USA
*CARDIFF, WALES
*CHICAGO, IL
*HOUSTON, TX
*PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA
*and like 15 other cities

I love it when people are doing the same thing in Pittsburgh and Phnom Penh on the same day.

The Pittsburgh Santarchy will start at 2:00pm at the fountain in the South Side Works on Saturday, December 8, 2007.

In my attempt to find amazing pictures to illustrate each of these posts I discovered this picture on Flickr. I have no idea who these people are but I am glad they are sharing this picture. Apparently they met this Santa somewhere where it is warm and that this guy participates in the Pittsburgh Santarchy!

Thanks to Flickr member OhBurner for sharing this picture on Flickr. I love this picture because I just spent some time in Honolulu for turkey day (visiting Pittsburgh friends) and was wondering how Santa handles the warm weather.

Click here for some great pictures from Pittsburgh Santarchy 2006.

I think there is even a picture of the great Golf Cart Santa!
