Ice Cream Sundays at East End Brewing

One of the best kept patio secrets in Pittsburgh, is the patio at the East End Brewing Brewery in the Larimer neighborhood. Last year they transformed the parking lot into a delightful beer garden.

The East End Brewing Brewery has always been a family-friendly spot for spending an afternoon. The patio makes this a great place for everyone to spend a hot summer afternoon with a cold beer (or root beer, which they usually have on tap). Just a heads up that East End Brewing also has a location in the Strip District, the East End Brewing Taproom, so make sure to point your GPS to the East End Brewing Brewery on Julius Street if you are looking for ice cream.

Ice Cream Sundays at East End Brewing

Well the good folks over at East End Brewing have come up with a way to make Sunday afternoons even better… ice cream. Starting this Sunday, July 9, there will be a different ice cream vendor at the brewery.

Here is the line up of tasty frozen treat vendors….

Keep an eye out for some limited-edition beer-inspired flavors of ice cream and my sources say there may even been some beer & ice cream floats.

If you aren’t an eat dessert first kind of person, the Tango Food Truck will be on site each week* so you can have something savory before a sweet treat.  *(Tango food truck will not be at the Brewery on August 6.)

Good Beer, Delicious Ice Cream, Really Nice Neighbors

I can’t say enough good things about East End Brewing. Scott Smith who is the owner as well as everyone who works there could not be nicer. This is by far one of my favorite businesses in town and they also make some great beers. If you have not yet had an ice cream sandwich from Leona’s Ice Cream, you are missing out. Last week I arrived at the market in Aspinwall, Feast on Brilliant, just as they were closing for the day. I was determined to pick up some Leona’s ice cream sandwiches. So I talked the poor clerk into letting me come inside to buy some ice cream sandwiches before they locked the door. Like Scott Smith, the owners of Leona’s are also incredibly nice people. Leona’s is also local, just down the street in Wilkinsburg, they have been an active participant in some of the redevelopment activities.

The best way to keep up on the Ice Cream Sundays at East End Brewing and all of the other food vendors that stop by the brewery is this “Come Hungry” calendar on their website, which is also a Google calendar you can subscribe too as well.

What’s that you say? You need a better way to keep track of tasty cool treat happenings? How about a twitter list of ice cream shops in Pittsburgh! You can find that list right here.

Don’t forget about Dave & Andy

Today, Tuesday, April 14, 2015 is Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s locations around the US.  That means everyone who walks into the shop (usually after standing in line) get a free ice cream cone of your choice.

I like to use Free Cone Day (I wrote about this last year) to everyone in Pittsburgh about Dave & Andy’s Ice Cream in Oakland.  This fine ice cream establishment has been making and serving ice cream to Pittsburghers since 1983.  If you want to skip the lines and spend a few dollars at a locally owned business, head over to Dave & Andy’s on Atwood Street in Oakland for an ice cream cone instead.

While we try to support as many local businesses as possible, the local Pittbsurgh Ben & Jerry’s is a pretty cool story too.  You can read about the Pittsburgh Ben & Jerry’s partner shop that provides job training to at-risk youth here.

You can read our post from Free Cone Day 2014 to learn more about free stuff in Pittsburgh here.

Ben, Jerry, Dave & Andy – Let’s Talk Ice Cream

free cone day pittsburghToday, Tuesday, April 8, 2014 is free cone day at Ben 7 Jerry’s Scoop Shops across the country.

The Pittsburgh location of Ben & Jerry’s is located downtown at 936 Penn Ave.  This location is operated by the Pittsburgh non-profit Life’s Work and provides on-the-job training to youth who face employment barriers.

From the Life’s Work website:

Located at 936 Penn Avenue in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, Life’sWork’s Ben & Jerry’s PartnerShop is one of only three PartnerShops in the U.S. and is an important part of Ben & Jerry’s corporate social mission. The Ben & Jerry’s PartnerShop Training Program directly impacts the lives of youth with disabilities and at-risk youth and benefits the entire community.

By reducing the high school dropout rate, decreasing recidivism and providing an opportunity for youth to become wage-earning, tax-paying citizens, the Ben & Jerry’s PartnerShop Training Program has seen graduates who are more focused and have a higher self-esteem.

In addition, by identifying potential dropouts as early as possible and providing intensive intervention, the Ben & Jerry’s PartnerShop Training Program has helped to decrease the need for students to rely on public assistance and other social programs throughout their lives.

What about Dave & Andy?

A little pixelated – but one of my favorite IheartPGH photos

I don’t like to write about Pittsburgh ice cream with out mentioning Dave & Andy.  I usually skip the line for free cone day and head over to Oakland to buy an ice cream cone from Dave & Andy’s Homemade Ice Cream.

Dave & Andy’s has been making ice cream in Pittsburgh since 1983.  They have incredible flavors in ice cream and frozen yogurt.

You can follow them on twitter @DaveandAndys

But wait, there’s more … more free stuff in Pittsburgh

Looking for more free things to do in Pittsburgh – make sure you check out the Free and Almost Free in Pittsburgh MeetUp group.

This MeetUp group currently has 50 upcoming events that are free (or almost free).  The organizers recently started  a Free and Almost Free in Pittsburgh Facebook group here.

One more free item to share – if you haven’t tried the ride-service Lyft yet – you can use this link to get a free Lyft ride upto $25.  That is more than enough to take a Lyft ride from anywhere in the city to Ben & Jerry’s or Dave & Andy’s.  I’m pretty sure your Lyft driver would be happy to join you for some ice cream.

Free Ben and Jerry's on Election Day

Bring your voting stub to Ben and Jerry’s between 5-8pm on Nov. 4, 2008 and get a free scoop of ice cream.

I think that the only Ben & Jerry’s in Pittsburgh is in Sq. Hill on Forbes Ave.

I guess it has been a while since I have been in Ben & Jerry’s (probably because I am often seeking the ice cream at Oh Yeah!) – I didn’t know Steven Colbert had his own flavor – Americone Dream.
