“Cold Turkey” Screening at The Hollywood Theater – Thursday 11/21

cold-turkey-posterJust in time for the family fun of the holidays!  Cold Turkey is a film about families and Thanksgiving.  With an all star cast, including Peter Bogdanovich and Cheryl Hines, this looks like a promising film.

You can watch Cold Turkey online at Amazon and Google Play.  If you would like to catch this film on the big screen, Cold Turkey will be showing at The Hollywood Theater in Dormont this Thursday, November 21, 2013 at 7:30pm. Tickets are available online via Gathr.

A friend of mine sent me the preview to this film last week and I thought this was worth sharing.  Here is your opportunity to check out a Thanksgiving film a week before Turkey day and an excuse to visit one of Pittsburgh’s independent movie theaters.  (Check out the IheartPGH guide to independent movie theaters in Pittsburgh here).

Looking for more holiday movies on the big screen? The Hollywood Theater in Dormont will be screening Planes, Trains and Automobiles and It’s a Wonderful Life this weekend – check out the November schedule here.

Four Short Films by Pittsburgh Filmmakers – Sat. Dec. 3

There is a lot happening in the Pittsburgh filmmaking scene.  We aren’t just talking about the big films – yes Tom Cruise has been in town.  But there are lots of smaller projects happening here too.

This Saturday, December 3 there will be a screening of four short films by Pittsburgh filmmakers the event is titled A Night of Altered Reality and will be held at the Hollywood Theater in Dormont.  I first learned about the film, Lightweight, from the Steeltown Film Factory competition and it is exciting to see the finished film.  The Steeltown Film Factory is an annual competition that is open to anyone – the submission period for the 2012 contest is now open.

The four films that will be screened are:

A Night of Altered Reality, a screening of short films that intersect at the corner of Surreal Street and Dream Drive.

Save the Date – May 4th – The Hollywood Theater in Dormont Will Reopen

photo copyright Jennifer Baron

Local movie theater lovers rejoice! Thanks to a group of volunteers – Friends of the Hollywood Theater – the Hollywood Theater in Dormont will be reopening this spring.

May 4th – The Hollywood Theater will host a screening of the PBS documentary The New Metropolis.

Looking forward The Hollywood Theater will host the 48 Hour Film Festival, Rocky Horror Picture show and many other community events.

Determined not to lose another single-screen theater, a group of local movie-lovers, area residents and community leaders banded together to formulate a strategy to reopen the beloved Hollywood. The result was the FOHT, whose mission is to reopen the theater not only to show movies, but as a community center where the public can enjoy movies, film festivals, concerts, and special events such as big screen viewings of sporting events and the Academy Awards. The FOHT hopes that reopening the theater will add to the vitality of the Potomac Avenue business district, Dormont, and the entire region.

Check out the Post-Gazette article on The Hollywood Theater here.

They are working on updating the website – www.TheHollywoodDormont.org and you can follow the Facebook page here.

Here are some great photos of the interior of the theater (interior photos are copyright Fred Terling):

You can learn more about The New Metropolis here.  I think this will be a really interesting film that addresses some issues that Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas are dealing with.
