A Very Special Turkey Bacon Night

This just in from the good bacon loving folks at the Harris Grill. In honor of Thanksgiving this Wednesday (Nov. 25, 2009) will be Turkey Bacon Night – the turkey bacon starts at 8pm. Since you will probably be out and about visiting with those old high school prom dates and reliving memories that you probably would prefer to forget, you might as well be doing that with some bacon, in this case Turkey bacon. Because there are quite a few people out there that believe that bacon makes almost everything better.

Porcine Pardon Punishes Poultry

We’re letting our little pink pals off the hook for a very special pre-T-Day Bacon Night on Wednesday, November 25. That’s right: for the first time ever, Harris Grill will be ladling out the Turkey Bacon on Wednesday night just to get you in the mood. Bring your out of town guests in for a specialtreat starting at 8:00 pm, when we’ll also have the effervescent Miller Light Girills pushing lip-chilling aluminum pounders of Shadyside’s favorite get-the-job-done Lite beer.

Seeking Shelter from the Family?

And another important public service announcement for those of you who need to escape from your families after 12 fun filled hours of cooking, cleaning and turkey eating. The Harris Grill will open at 9pm on Thanksgiving evening to provide shelter and drinks for those who have had a little too much family fun! (the photo below came up when I typed “Thanksgiving Fun” into Flickr – yes, I think those are cats dressed up for Thanksgiving).

Once you’re tired of all the family squabbling, swing on over to the Grill where we’ll be opening the bar at 9:00 pm to help you forget about the day. Dad’s just never gonna understand that surface piercing, but we’ll help you get over that.

Bring your bartender a plate of leftovers and get a free shot of Imperial!

WARNING: If you are a vegetarian you might want to skip this post – it is 100% about bacon.

IheartPGH owes alot to bacon, we didn’t really think much of this blog and only a handful of our friends read this little website – and four years ago that was a pretty small group of people that were willing to read a blog. But then we posted about Bacon Night (TGIB – Bacon Night 11/18/2005)at the Harris Grill and somehow the Post-Gazette found that post and mentioned this humble little blog in the paper and things started to change.

So I have noticed that bacon is kind of a big deal for many of our readers so here is an event for the bacon lovers.

The Blue Ribbon Bacon Tour, Saturday, September 26, 11:00 – 4:00, Harris Grill – $30 gets you 5 hours of bacon goodness. You can even purchase a signed copy of the book Bacon: A Love Story: A Salty Survey of Everybody’s Favorite Meat. A must read for the bacon enthusiast. Continue reading

Welcome Back Harris Grill

You could not asked for a nicer afternoon to reopen the Harris Grill. I have not had a chance to stop in yet but I have received emails from a few many fans of the Harris asking me to share the news that the Harris Grill has reopened for business. I am very very happy to have the Harris Grill back.

If you are new to IheartPGH or to Pittbsurgh, the Harris Grill is a wonderful locally owned restaurant that has been closed since they had a fire last summer. The Harris is especially great for warm weather because they have two great big patios – that are perfect for outdoor dining and drinking. I did drive by at around 8pm this evening and there was even a line to get a table.

The Harris Grill is located on Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside.

More blog coverage of the reopening is available here and here

What is your favorite Restaraunt

WQED has a poll on their websites for the best restaurants in Pittsburgh.  This is your chance to vote for what you think are the best restaraunts in town.  Click here to cast your votes – you get to enter anything you want, no check boxes here.  This is a great way to help support some of your favorite local businesses.  I have no idea why they need categories for best chain – so I suggest you skip that one.  This list is also missing a category for coffee shop – which I think is an important thing to recognize.  Here are some of my answers:

  • AMERICAN: Cappy’s – I love the pretzel sticks
  • BARGAIN: The Pretzel Shop
  • CONTINENTAL: Does anyone actually still use this term?
  • DOWNTOWN LUNCH: Franktuary – Hot dogs, fancy potato chips, wifi, awesome.
  • MEXICAN: MadMex – because they celebrate important holidays like ground hog day and leap year.
  • MICROBREWERY: East End Brewing – while this is a brewery not a restaraunt, they definitly do amazing things with beer.
  • OUTDOOR DINING: Harris Grill – Definitely the best patio – letting you draw with chalk was an added bonus
  • POST-THEATER DINING: Palate – Pittsburgh is very lucky to have this place
  • PRE-THEATER DINING: Palate – trust me, its tasty
  • SPORTS BAR: The Sharp Edge – Sports with out being too crazy (and its smoke free!)
  • BEST OVERALL: The Union Project Cafe – I give this the best because this place is all around awesome – amazing food, wonderful people, great cause, great new chef.
