One of the things that makes Pittsburgh great – is the affordable cost of living here.  In recent years, a number of groups have started to promote and support local crafters and artists. Now there are lots of festivals, some shops and websites where you can purchase interesting, one of a kind, handmade items from local artists and crafters.  Over the past few years the craft seen in Pittsburgh has flourished with a couple of different groups working to promote handmade businesses.  A few years ago, I had a ton of fun spending an afternoon with some of the crafters at the beehive talking blogs and business and I honored to be included on their panel on social media this weekend.  Not only is the crafting movement a good thing for the local economy but its great to see  a groups of passionate people supporting their businesses and creating a fun community in Pittsburgh.

BusinessofCraftLogoThe Business of Craft is a day long workshop this Saturday, hosted by the Pittsburgh Craft Collective.  This is a day of workshops and speakers focused on how to improve your crafting business.  While this is being organized by crafters – I think that many of the topics will also apply to small business as well and there will lots of info on using the internet to promote your business.

I will be one of the panelists talking about social media and small business.  I am looking forward to meeting these amazing other presenters Tara Gentile of Scoutiegirl.com, Carrie Nardini of I Made It! Market, Alissa Martin of Pavement, Michelle Hammons of Burgh Baby, Mundania Horvath of Steeltown Anthem. Continue reading

Links Worth a Look – January 22nd

Here are some links/articles/blog posts that are worth a look:

  • Pittsburgh Magazine's Eat Street visits Pangea – We are happy to see a write up on Pangea as we were just wondering if this place was still open. Lovely spot in Shadyside that is in the space where Pasta Piatto used to be years ago.
  • 5 Place to Find Handmade in Pittsburgh – the blog Handmade in PA has a great post about 5 places to find handmade items – or make something handmade here in Pittsburgh – some are old favorites and some new finds too. (via the Pittsburgh Craft Collective)
  • Red Pop Shop on Etsy – Just learned about this nifty little online shop that is run by 3 Pittsburgh friends – a great selection on vintage housewares – glasses, mugs, plates, ash trays and more. Some handmade items too. Check out their $5 or less selections too.

Handmade Arcade 2009

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Handmade Arcade is this weekend!

HA:09Pittsburgh’s award-winning independent free craft fair, the Handmade Arcade, will return to the Hunt Armory located at 324 Emerson St. on December 12, 2009, from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Out of 250 applicants, a collection of 90 local and not-so-local crafters will converge to help attendees find the most unique indy gifts for the holiday season. Returning for their third year is our rust belt neighbor, Campfire Goods, from Akron, Ohio.

I recently spoke to Campfire roadie Andy Taray, who is excited to return to the Steel City for the event:

Handmade Arcade has such a cool vibe to because it has sort of a small town feel to it, yet its such a nice big event… I feel like the event has a large majority of its shoppers coming from within the city, as opposed to many of the other shows that have people flocking in from all over the place. So there is definitely a huge Pittsburgh vibe going on… which pretty much always results in some great stories for sure… and accents!
