Zombies Save Pittsburgh – A Halloween Party for A Good Cause

Can Zombies Save Pittsburgh?  With your help yes! (If you are just looking for details on the Zombie Halloween Party scroll to the bottom of the page – keep reading for details on how and why I think you should check out the party).

CHS-Plain-MastheadFor the past few holiday seasons, IheartPGH has joined with other bloggers to help a Pittsburgh non-profit – Community Human Services (CHS) – make sure that some of the less fortunate Pittsburghers have some holiday gifts.  I was happy to support this project and over the past few years I have learned a lot more about CHS and the incredible and important services they provide.

Last year, at the holiday party I had the opportunity to chat with a woman who works for CHS and works with the kids in Allegheny County that have signed themselves out of the foster care system.  These are 18 year-olds that don’t have families and many don’t have a place to live.  CHS works to get these kids housing and to give them at least some sort of a holiday gift.

I have been thinking about the best way to write about CHS and their upcoming Halloween Party – and then I read this article in the Tampa Bay Times this afternoon – Amid churchgoers, an orphan pleads for a family, October 7, 2013.  And I burst into tears.  Please take a moment to read this story.  I was struck by how along this kid felt and I’ve been thinking all day about what I can do about this.  While I am not sure what I can do to help Davion find a family in Florida – I can help to support a Pittsburgh organization that is working on these issues right here.

Fortunately, you don’t have to wait until December to support CHS! This Saturday, CHS is hosting what is sure to be an incredible event, No One Survives Alone, a zombie themed Halloween Party – this Saturday, October 19, 2013.  The party is going to be at Clear Story Studios – which is an incredible office space located on the South Side. Music by DJ Zombo, a beer bar sponsored by Yuengling, specialty cocktails with Fortis Vodka and Bluecoat Gin, appetizers from Whole Foods, Red Oak Cafe and Catering.

There is Still Time to Help Save Xmas & Win Some Pgh Stuff Too!

I wanted to post a reminder about supporting Community Human Services Holiday Gift Project.  The response to my post earlier this week has been amazing.  This is a great way to highlight some local business owners that have donated items for the raffle as well.  Here is an update on the event and on the online fundraising campaign & raffle – we’ve added some more great Pittsburgh items to give away.

IheartPGH has been a supporter of the CHS Holiday Gift Project for the past 3 years and we hope you will take a moment to learn more about this organization and check out some of the great local businesses and bloggers that have helped to support this project in 2012.

What is Community Human Services (CHS)? CHS is a Pittsburgh based non-profit that in located in Oakland and serves the entire Pittsburgh area.  CHS is over 30 years old and offers a variety of programs for Pittsburghers struggling with homelessness, mental illness, health issues and more.

What is the CHS Holiday Gift Project? CHS will use the funds raised to provide a small gifts for the individuals and families they serve.  Many of these individuals and families are not included in other holiday gift programs which are geared towards children and the elderly.

Cookies and Cards Reception for the CHS Holiday Gift Card Drive

We are happy to support the Community Human Services (CHS) holiday gift card drive again this year.  This is a great and easy way to support CHS and help them get holiday gifts to some Pittsburghers who might not have much of a holiday.  Last years Cookies and Cards event was a blast – a nice chance to hang out with some old friends and to meet some new ones.  This year the event will be held at the Shiloh Grill in Mt. Washington.

CHS has been working in Oakland and neighborhoods around Pittsburgh since the early 1970s.  CHS offers a variety of programs to serve people in the Pittsburgh area.  CHS has a range of programs to help those dealing with homelessness and mental health.

You can help CHS with their holiday programming by donating a gift card or two.   Stop by the event on Monday December 5 or you can send gift cards to their offices in Oakland

A Walk to End Poverty For All

I am sorry that I didn’t get to post this sooner  – there is still time to register!  I am happy to spread the word about a great event to benefit a great organization – CHS (Community Human Services).  Thanks to Ms. Mon for putting this post together.

Come join your fellow Pittsburghers for “A Walk to End Poverty for All” March 26, 2011 from 9 a.m. to noon. The title of the event sounds a little idealistic, but that’s what this town is founded upon – great ideals.  Every step – and in this case – we take that very literally – toward raising awareness of the extreme poverty that exists within our own country – and city – is one step toward making things better.

Community Human Services, a South Oakland-based nonprofit that provides shelter, housing, food, rental assistance, in-home help and community supports is reaching out to residents of Allegheny County to help their less fortunate neighbors by joining them at Harmar Grove Pavilion in North Park Saturday, March 26, to walk, run or roll a 1.3 mile course around the South Ridge Loop across from Pie Traynor Field. (You don’t know who Pie Traynor is?)

There are 41,000 children under the age of 18 affected by poverty in Allegheny County. In Pittsburgh, every fourth person standing in a soup kitchen line is a child. By pledging a small amount of money you can make a big difference. So come out and mingle with some good-hearted Pittsburghers and get some fresh air!

There are planned activities, free snacks, swag bags, event T-shirts, raffle tickets, music and more (by that we mean some local celebrities!).

For all the details and a registration application, visit www.chscorp.org

Just getting ready to head over the the Double Wide Grill to watch the Steelers and support the CHS holiday gift card drive – CHS is working very hard to provide some holiday cheer for some Pittsburgh families that they work with.

Can’t make it to the Double Wide on Sunday – scroll down for more ways to help.

I just want to take a moment to say thanks to everyone that has been so supportive of this project and event.  When the folks from Chevy emailed me in October – they offered a pair of Steelers tickets in exchange for helping to spread the word about the Chevy Road to the Playoff event.

Brett from, OnlyinPgh and I asked, and they graciously agreed to let us use this Steelers Watch party as an event to raise awareness of and collect gift cards for the CHS holiday programs.  And they loved the suggestion of hosting the event at the Double Wide Grill – which is another great coincidence because the folks at the Double Wide Grill have been working with Pittsburgh non profits year round to hold fundraising breakfasts.

A huge thanks to the following blogs for helping to spread the word about the event – I am amazed at how many people are willing to work to help spread the word about this event

And and extra special thanks to Moop Shop and Direct Online Marketing for their generous offers of support.  And to Dan Gigler for including the event in his Steelers new on the Post-Gazette’s Blog ‘n’ Gold. Continue reading
