Hello Pittsburgh! It’s shaping up to be another perfect weekend in Pittsburgh – there is an activity that is sure to please everyone this weekend! Here are the links for the events we shared on WDVE this morning – plus even more stuff to do that we didn’t have time to mention on the radio. Please be sure to leave a comment or send us a tweet with your favorite place for pierogi in Pittsburgh!
This is a road race but on steps from the website – “As with any trail race, following the course is another part of the challenge. There are 47 turns on the course. We don’t have volunteers guiding you at every turn – this ain’t no pansy-ass road race!”
Online registration is closed, race day registration is still available
celebrate Braddock Avenue Books, a new press based in Braddock
The event will feature East End Book Exchange’s pop-up bookstore, art by Anna E. Mikolay, homemade pizza from the community pizza oven (with special chef appearance by Kevin Sousa)
Happy almost October! Here is our weekly round up of events we share on WDVE – Fridays at 6:45 am. Lots of great fall activities for Pittsburghers of all age. This town has some great ways to put the FEST in Oktoberfest.
Here is a tasty event for a good cause (we love good events for good causes). But first a little background – if you are a regular IheartPGH reader then you probably know a little about Braddock and how there has been some cool stuff happening in what is often seen as an abandoned steel mill town. If you are a newer reader – first of all hello and thanks for reading. You may have seen some stuff about Braddock on tv and through the Levi’s “We are all workers” campaign” – which was photographed in Braddock and ran in ads around the country last year. You can read more about the Levi’s campaign in the Post-Gazette and New York Times.
The Carnegie Library in Braddock was founded in 1889 and expanded in 1893. This building was not just for books and includes a music hall, gymnasium and swimming pool. This was the FIRST Carnegie Library in the United States.

The Braddock Carnegie Arts Program is a more recent addition to the Library – the old bathhouse area has been transformed into a ceramics studio that is used for classes and open studio. Classes are offered for free or for a nominal fee and the studio has been supported by many volunteer hours as well.
Which brings us to the Chili Cook Off – for the fifth year – there will be a Chili Cook Off in Braddock to benefit the arts program.

Double Wide Grill is hosting a playoff beard competition
Stop by the Double Wide Grill on Carson St to get your before photo. Best beard will be selected during each of the elimination games. $500 cash prize to the best playoff beard. Also prizes for beard of the game. Not in Pittsburgh – you can participate online too.
I was already going to post about this event because anything that is happening in Braddock is usually worth a visit. So when I received this email from the Deputy Mayor of Braddock I knew it would be worth a look. A chance to do some holiday shopping in Braddock (and not the mall) in another plus.
I then looked up the website for New Guild Studios – www.newguildstudio.com
New Guild Studio is definitly worth a visit – they specialize in religious art – restoration or construction of some large scale pieces.
I have always wondered who works on these types of things, especially after a visit to St. Nicholas Church – if you haven’t stopped in there yet – the murals are AMAZING.
