Amnesty International Film Festival

Thank you Amnesty. The Amnesty Film Festival comes back to Pittsburgh from September 7 to September 11. Fifteen films will be presented, profiling human rights struggles across the globe. Films from Cuba, Peru, Cambodia … and even Brooklyn.

I am definitely going to try to make it to some of these films. They fascinating, especially after this summer’s crappy Hollywood offerings. As much as films like this shake our senses, they also offer us hope and encouragement in trying times. We are all world citizens.

Here’s a sample movie:

WAR GAMES: East Coast Premiere

“In January 2003, an amazing event took place in Southern Sudan. A few miles from the front line of one of Africa’s longest and most brutal conflicts, thousands of children came together to compete in a barefoot, bootleg Olympics. War Games tells the compelling story of the realization of the Twic Olympics, following events as they unfold and providing an intimate portrait of a community devastated by war, yet still determined to make the most of every moment.”

A listing of the first week’s films are here, at the Pittsburgh City paper.

Riverside Center for Innovation

RiversideThe Riverside Center for Innovation is an office complex on the North Shore where small businesses can find many resources from cheap office space to start-up counseling to shared office services. The rents go from month to month, are below market rate and include include internet and utilities. Office services include conference room rental, telephone, voicemail, and IT support. They also have partnerships with the SBA and other government agencies (and they can help you with your taxes! It’s always better to make friends with the tax man in the beginning – because they will find you.)

Plus, the center located in a Pittsburgh Technology Zone (which apparently offers fancy perks) and serves most of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Go get your entrepreneurship on.

The Shadow Lounge

Just a few years ago, before Whole Foods, East Liberty was not a destination for many people. Now Highland Avenue’s activity expands beyond shadyside and the Shadow Lounge sits in the middle of this new found nighborhood at the corner of Highland and Baum Blvd.

I am so glad Pittsburgh has Justin Strong who opened the Shadow Lounge 5 years ago to provide a coffee shop and performance space because there was no other place for performers.

The Shadow Lounge hosts a whole range of music and performances. By far the best late night place in Pittsburgh (I was there on a Saturday last winter to hear the house band and we didn’t leave til 4 am because they were so good)

In the past year they have expanded to add the Blue Room with a projection TV. Soon they will have a liqour liscense.

Check out the website to see what is happening.

The workshop is geared to give the a non-political person the tools and info needed to plan and run a successful campaign.

The Sept. 17th workshop is for women only. The state of PA is far behind the other states in terms of elected women officials. Stay tuned as more workshops may be available.
