How Pittsburgh Gets Ready for the Pirates Postseason

buctoberIf you are new to Pittsburgh, or are just a casual Pirates fan – you may be wondering why everyone is walking around in an extra layer of black and gold.  It is a BIG day in Pittsburgh.  The Pirates play a postseason game tonight at PNC Park.

The Independent Brewing Company Break Out The Television

I wanted to share the email that the Independent Brewing Company just sent out, which does an excelled job of explaining why the game tonight is a big deal.  If you haven’t been to the Independent Brewing Company yet – GO THERE NOW! A great bar, located in the heart of Sq. Hill that only server local brew.  If you can’t make it to the Independent Brewing Company RIGHT NOW, then take a moment to  follow @IndependentPGH on Twitter.

No.  We’re not putting the TVs back in and renewing Fanattics’ cable subscription.  Yes.  We are going to play tonight’s Pirates playoff game, which we will stream to a flat screen television through my espn.com account.

We stand by our position that televisions, for the most part, ruin good tavern experiences.  And after tonight’s game, we will return to our televisionless tavern lifestyle.  However, at the end of the day, if a newly-minted 21 year-old walked into the Indie tonight for her first legal beer, she would have witnessed exactly one season of Pirates playoff baseball in her life.  These things don’t come around often.  I’d like to think we’d televise another moon landing.  Pirates playoff appearances are just as rare.

Brew Gentleman Braddock Steeler Game

Watch the Steeler Game in the Shadow of a Steel Mill

Brew Gentleman Braddock Steeler GameI often try to think of the MOST Pittsburgh place one can watch the Steeler game, that doesn’t involved going to the game.  Well I don’t think it gets more Pittsburgh than this – now you can watch the game next to a steel mill.

The Brew Gentleman is a new brewery that opened this year in Braddock, just down the road from the Edgar Thomson Steelworks, which is a steel mill that is still that opened in 1872 and is still in operation today.

The brewery was founded by two wonderful fellows who I had the good fortune of meeting at this foodie, networking event a few years back.

Matt and Asa came to Pittsburgh to attend Carnegie Mellon and have stayed in town to open a brewery.  I just opened their latest email blast and The Brew Gentleman will be showing the Steeler game this Sunday, September 28, 2014 – the game is at 1pm and they will open at noon.

The Brew Gentleman’s brewery is a beautiful space with a spacious tasting room.  Head down for the Steeler game or stop by for a beer during their regular hours – Wednesday-Saturday 4-10pm.

Food will be available from Caroline’s Chili – which is a new food vendor in town and new to twitter (be sure to follow @CarolinesChili).

Pittstarter – A Gentle Demolition of The House of Gold

Update 9/24 – Just 24 hours left til the Kickstarter deadline and the artist needs to raise $12,000.  Click here to go directly to the Kickstarter page for the House of Gold.

I learned about the House of Gold project over the summer and I wanted to share this Kicstarter project that only has a few more days to reach the funding goal.   Artist Dee Briggs lives next door to this house on Swissvale avanue. Last year, Dee was able to purchase the house thanks to the Allegheny County Vacant Property Recovery program.  This Kickstart project will help Dee deconstruct the house and re-imagine this site as a space for the community.

I think it is an important project for Wilkinsburg and Pittsburgh in general as it sparks a conversation about abandoned buildings.  At one point in its history The House of Gold was a corner store – and hopefully will be replaced with a community space and coffee shop in the near future.  This Kickstarter is a great way to help a motivated community member help to transform an abandoned property.

Here are a few of the reasons why I like this project and I think you should consider making a contribution to the House of Gold Kickstarter project…

  1. A Gold House? Which is the perfect color for a building in a city that loves the color scheme of black and gold.  I like the idea of using gold paint to show this abandoned house in a new light.
  2. Telling the history of the house – take a few moments to check out the House of Gold website.  The artist has put together an incredible history of the house and the people who used to live here.
  3. Wilkinsburg – I have been driving down Penn Avenue for my entire life and most recently found myself wondering what would become of the Penn Lincoln Hotel.  What once was a meeting place of people had been abandoned and in the past few weeks was torn down.  How did a historic building, that was a thriving hub become a forgotten neighborhood?  Check out some of these photos from AbadonedOnline.net of the Penn-Lincoln Hotel before it was demolished.
  4. Gently demolition – take a moment to watch the Kickstarter video – it is worth the two minutes of your time, and Dee does a much better job of telling the story than I could here in a blog post.  I really like the idea of gently and carefully dismantling this house.  As much as I would love to save every old building in Allegheny county, some really do have to come down and the idea of carefully taking apart the building and separating out the historic pieces for reuse elsewhere, while reducing what would need to go into a landfill makes sense to me.
