About Laura Stamm & Her Discussion
Laura Stamm is a Film Studies PhD Candidate at the University of Pittsburgh working on her dissertation titled “New Queer Cinema and the Biopic: Sustaining Life During the AIDS Crisis.” Her research centers on histories of gender/ sexuality with a focus media culture’s ability to shape notions of personhood and identity.
Manifesto is in many ways a meditation on the cinematic medium itself–how images come to life on screen and how they make us feel. In the film, Cate Blanchett plays 13 different characters, calling into question how we identify with a film’s world and narrative. And yet, with Blanchett embodying 13 individual performances, Manifesto also calls forth a history of how women have appeared on screen. This introduction to the film will discuss the history of women in cinema, telling that history through the particular case of Cate Blanchett.
