Party for a Purpose – The League of Young Voters

Pittsburgh Party for a Purpose is back with another sure to be awesome event to benefit the League of Young Voters Education Fund.
Friday , June 20, 9pm-2am @ The Library.

Reasons why I think you should attend this event:

  1. The People: The Pittsburgh Party for a Purpose people are great. This is a fine group of people that I always enjoy talking to, they have nice friends too and draw a big crowd of good people to benefit good causes.
  2. The Cause: I have been a volunteer and cheer leader for the League of Young Voters for as long as the league has been in Pittsburgh. I have been lucky enough to attend 2 of their annual conventions. I read this book which was written by the founders of The League in Dec. 2004 and I was thrilled when Khari convinced them to hold their annual conference here in Pittsburgh. If you really want to support the work of political engagement – the league is the top group.
  3. The Location: The Library – the menus are in old books, there is non smoking, it is in a historic building, you can take the bus there, and they have a big patio.  Oh yeah and they have sweet potato fries.  I know that they haven’t updated their website in a while (Jan!) but I am sure they are still open.  Note to businesses that have websites – please update so that we can write about you with the most current info.

Amy's Army & Charity Bar Crawl

I have seen posters for Amy’s Army before but I wasn’t really sure what this is all about.  I had the opportunity to meet some of the volunteers from Amy’s Army this evening at Discover Pittsburgh.  Amy is a 15 year old girl from Mt. Lebanon – she was diagnosed with Leukemia about 5 years ago but they have not found a bone marrow match.  Amy’s Army is a group of volunteers who are working to get more people registered with the national bone marrow registry.

Getting registered is easy – it is a swab of your cheek and the kit can be sent right to your home or you can get registered when you give blood.

You can also support Amy’s Army by joining their Charity Bar Crawl this Saturday, May 17, 2008.  The bar crawl is just $10 and everything benefits Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Make some Friends at the Friendship Flower & Folk Festival

So Friendship is this great neighborhood that doesn’t get enough love in Pittsburgh. I don’t know a ton about Friendship, it is located between Bloomfield and East Liberty. It is a neighborhood filled with big old historic houses and all kinds of great people. I do know that I just really like the people that I know that live in Friendship.

This Saturday, May 10 is the Friendship Flower and Folk Festival. The festival will be held in the Baum Grove Park which is a great little parklet just behind Day Automotive on Baum Blvd. The Flower sale benefits the upkeep of the park. There is Folk Music to listen to and I am sure there will be great people to meet.

On Saturday, May 10th the birds will be singing, the flowers blooming and your neighbors will be swinging at the annual Friendship Flower and Folk Festival! The event this year promises to be as good as ever with folk music, fresh flowers and good times! Jam to folk music featuring acoustic, folk, and bluegrass music from many of the best local performers! Get your garden started and purchase beautiful, locally-grown plants, heirloom vegetables and special Mother’s Day Baskets. All proceeds benefit the maintenance of Baum Grove. Enjoy all day long events sponsored by Friendship Preservation Group including delicious grilled food, the ever-popular book sale, and an awesome raffle. Live demonstrations by the Animal Rescue League, Health Works, PA and Urban Farming Initiative.
