Pirate Ship in the Park

Family fun for everyone at Blue Slide Park.  This Saturday is the annual Story Walk.  Beginning with Books is an organization that exists to get more kids reading at a young age.  Each year Beginning with Books host a Story Walk in the park and brings books to life.  There are life sized story book settings in the park. This year’s Story Walk is Pirate themed and the featured book is Henry and the Buccaneer Bunnies which was illustrated by Pittsburgher John Manders.  There will even be a giant pirate ship set up in Blue Slide Park.

As any Pittsburgh child will tell you, Blue Slide Park is the BEST playground in town located at the entrance to Frick park on Beechwood Blvd.  See a map of the park here.  Here (and here) are some nice posts about others who love Blue Slide Park.

Dog Days of Summer

Well it isn’t actually the dog days of summer because we are past the hottest days of the summer.  According to Wikipedia, the dog days of summer are usually mid July to mid August.  But this event deserves the name dog days.  You and your favorite pet can enjoy one last splash of summer together at Sandcastle.

This is definitly the ultimate canine pool party.  All proceeds benefit Animal Friends.

Before the pools are drained for the summer and autumn leaves cover the park grounds, Sandcastle Water Park is throwing open its gates for the ultimate canine pool party. Hot dogs will find cool relief at Sandcastle, splashing around in the wave pool and feasting on chicken-flavored snow cones. Human guests will enjoy fun games and a canine bathing suit contest. We’ll also be offering a “kiddie pool” reserved for dogs 35-pounds and under to frolic with fidos of their own size!

Limited spaces are available, so register early! Admission is $15 per dog and benefits our homeless residents. Humans may attend for free. Don’t miss this guaranteed great time! Call 412.847.7056 to secure your spot for the 1:30 – 3:30 session today!

There are a couple of things mentioned in this event description that are worth repeating…

  • chicken-flavored snow cones
  • canine bathing suit contest
  • kiddie pool for smaller dogs

From the Trib website:

Dogs must be non-aggressive, over four months of age, current on shots and wearing an identification tag. Owners must accompany their dogs at all times and keep dogs leashed while outside of the pool. The swimming fun is exclusively for the canine crowd; humans are permitted in the pool only up to their knees.

BIG SOCIAL

Big Brothers Big Sisters BIG SOCIAL.  I have a friend who volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters and raves about it.  The Big Social is an easy way to learn more about the Big Brothers Big Sisters program here in Pittsburgh.

If you ever thought about volunteering as a mentor, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh is hosting a bash with you as the guest of honor. After a long day at work, let loose and enjoy a live DJ, food and cocktails as you network and talk about what mentoring is like with current Big Brothers and Big Sisters in the Pittsburgh area. There is no obligation needed. Just consider it an excuse to have fun.

Furniture Sale

Welcome students! I stopped in Oakland for lunch today (I think Oakland is the best neighborhood for lunch).  Traffic, no parking signs, it all means that the students are moving in.  Welcome to Pittsburgh.  If you find yourself needing some furniture – look no further.  The Oakland Planning & Development Corporation (OPDC) has got a great event for you. This weekend is their 2nd Annual furniture sale. I think this is a great idea, discounted furniture for students and a way to recycle all of the furniture that gets left behind each spring.  It is a win-win idea.  Plus it raises money to help with future plans for Oakland.  Last year’s sale raise over $1000. From the pictures on their website it looks like they have tons of great stuff for dorm rooms and apartments.
