Walk Pittsburgh from anywhere

If you have read any of my posts on Urban Hike, you will know I am a big fan of walking around this city.  When I was in high school I read Annie Dillard’s An American Childhood.  Annie writes about growing up in Pittsburgh and I was addicted to this book as she attended the same high school and church that attended.  Annie writes about  learning to drive and exploring the neighborhoods of Pittsburgh and I often  think of her books as I explore one more alley that I have never driven down.  To this day, Gold way is still my favorite.

Walking Pittsburgh is way better than driving Pittsburgh.  If you are a regular IheartPGH reader you will know we are bigs fans of Urban Hike and I also highly recommend the South Side Slopes Step Trek (whcih is coming up on Oct. 14).

There is a new blog in town – Walking Pittsburgh.  My dear friends Matt and Tiffany have set up a great blog with amazing pictures from different walks around Pittsburgh.  So even if you can’t leave your home, or you are reading this from outside Pittsburgh you can see what different neighborhoods look like.  Each walk include information about architecture, history, some fun facts and a map of their walk.

Check out the statue of liberty they found that is made out of logos on their walk around Allegheny West.

Pittsburgh’s Ultimate Haunt

A local “scream team” of designers, artists, and builders have spent the last six months building an elaborate haunted attraction just minutes from downtown. You can see video, images, and a “Behind the Screams” video at www.scarehouse.com.

The ScareHouse haunted attraction is still looking for additional Pittsburgh actors and make-up artists to fill paid positions during the month of October. Auditions and interviews are being held until September 17th. All employees must be at least 18 years of age, and able to work for the entire production (Thursday through Sunday evenings, September 28th to October 28th)

Resumes and/or portfolios can be sent to info@scarehouse.com

or to:

Undead Productions, P.O. Box 101713, Pittsburgh, PA 15237

You may also call 412-781-5885 with any questions or to schedule an interview.

Meet Hatfield Street

Lawrenceville is one of Pittsburgh’s most happening neighborhoods. Butler street has been booming with new businesses in the past few years.

Well, there is a new street of businesses in Lawrenceville, Hatfield street is filling up with more great places to shop and see local art. Stop by this weekend for a Hatfield Street block party.

Art & ‘Tique on Hatfield Street
At least 20 local businesses and artists from Lawrenceville will come together on the 4700-4800 block of Hatfield Street from 11 a.m. through 5 p.m. on August 18 to showcase all that Lawrenceville has to offer.

“Art & ‘Tique on Hatfield” is free to the public and will feature fine art, antiques, clothing, food, music, and live performances in a block party setting. The celebration is the result of a collaboration between the Hatfield Street Galleries: DNA Blue Collar Gallery, The Society for Cultural Exchange, Trinity Gallery, and Zombo Gallery.

Bringing Bacon Back

We have blogged about this before (TGIB, November 2005).  I was just back at the Harris Grill last week enjoying their amazing establishment …

  • delightful outdoor seating
  • delicious food – I heart baby burgers
  • tasty beer
  • delightful fire pit in winter – I hope you will bring this back again this fall
  • super fun people who work there – my server Matt last week could not have been nicer

But there is another reason to love this place, no it is not the awesome pictures on the menus (I hope someday that can be me), or the frozen cosmos (love those too).

I was able to confirm that indeed, every Tuesday is still BACON NIGHT.  Thats right kids, free baskets of bacon at the bar.  I think there is a $1 charge to enjoy your bacon outside.  I think you will agree $1 is a small price to pay for bacon with your beer on the patio.

YERT Launch Party

I have always wanted to take a cross country road trip and really see the country. Now that I spend a lot of time writing about Pittbsurgh I can only imagine that there are great stories all over this country. That is why I envy this project.

YERT = Your Environmental Road Trip

YERT (Your Environmental Road Trip) is a year-long eco-expedition through all 50 United States. With video camera in hand and tongue in cheek, we’ll explore the landscape of America’s unique approach to environmental sustainability…. Follow us each week as we shamelessly bathe ourselves in the best (and weirdest) of America’s ecological progress with a mix of outrageous antics, provocative examples, and thoughtful reporting.

The YERT team is having their launch party right here in Pittsburgh
