Pittsburgh’s Ultimate Haunt

A local “scream team” of designers, artists, and builders have spent the last six months building an elaborate haunted attraction just minutes from downtown. You can see video, images, and a “Behind the Screams” video at www.scarehouse.com.

The ScareHouse haunted attraction is still looking for additional Pittsburgh actors and make-up artists to fill paid positions during the month of October. Auditions and interviews are being held until September 17th. All employees must be at least 18 years of age, and able to work for the entire production (Thursday through Sunday evenings, September 28th to October 28th)

Resumes and/or portfolios can be sent to info@scarehouse.com

or to:

Undead Productions, P.O. Box 101713, Pittsburgh, PA 15237

You may also call 412-781-5885 with any questions or to schedule an interview.

3 Courses for $30 with a side of Lights

If you have not made a trip downtown after dark I don’t know what you are waiting for. There is an AWESOME light display being projected on 5 different buildings downtown.

Even better, next week is Pittsburgh Restaurant Week (Mon-Thurs) – participating restaurants are offering a 3 course meal for $30.

This is all part of the Pittsburgh Celebrates Glass! I don’t really know what dining has to do with glass, but this is a great idea and a great way to check out some of the top chefs in Pittsburgh.

Visit www.PittsburghCelebrates.org for an updated listing of all participating Restaurant Week restaurants.

Here are my top picks from the list:

  • Nine on Nine, Downtown – I haven’t been there yet but I have heard rave reviews, so this seems like a good time to check this place out.
  • Kaya, Strip District – Everyone needs a little bit of Caribean this summer
  • Six Penn Kitchen, Downtown – Located right in the middle of everything and I LOVE the pretzel appetizer and the roof top bar.
  • Bonna Terra, Sharpsburg – Chef Douglas Dick was named 2007 Chef of the Year and they are know for using local ingredients

Just a quick reminder to check before you go because some of these places are closed on Monday.

Which ones would you recommend and why?

Drinking Green at Bossa Nova

Green Drinks is a national an international, monthly gathering of people who are interested in all things green (green as in environmentally green, not the color green, but I am sure there are gatherings for that too.)

Pittsburgh has a very active Green Drinks group that meets the 3rd Friday of every month.

The host for June is Braddock’s Mayor John Fetterman

John Fetterman will share with us his new launch in converting the Mon Valley’s steelmaking heart into the Greenest Place in the Pittsburgh area by converting the Enterprise Zone into a Green Enterprise Zone. In addition to his unique economic development approach, his sustainable methods include reuse of existing structures as major agents of economic conversion for his community. To read more about his work go to http://www.15104.cc or see this latest story in Pop City at http://www.popcitymedia.com/features/fetterman0425.aspx.

WHEN: 5:00 – 9:00, Friday, June 15th
RULE: Third Friday of every month
WHERE: at our NEW VENUE — Bossa Nova, 123 Seventh Ave Downtown
HOW: Walk, cycle, bus, boat, taxi or drive WHO: Anyone working on environmental issues or who wants to!
WHY: Fun, contacts, alcohol, info, gossip, inspiration, business and pleasure
NEW: Just go up to someone and say “are you green?”, and you’ll be made welcome.
REMIND: To get on this email circulation list, send an email to announcements@pittsburghgreendrinks.org

Flux

I am really excited to write about Flux. I had a really hard time deciding on a subject for this post. Here are some of the titles that didn’t make it:

  • Saturday Night, Alright Alright (I am really not an Elton John Fan)
  • One Big Ball of Pittsburgh Fun (I didn’t want you think that Flux requires you to wear a ball gown)
  • Flux is Fun (Sounds too much like a promo for the Children’s museum, Flux is was more fun than the Children’s museum).

What is Flux?
A great big party/art show/concert that highlights a neighborhood in Pittsburgh.

This Saturday (June16, 2007) Flux is Downtown. I have attended some of the previous Flux events of years past and I also attended the most recent Flux in Braddock was awesome. Tons of amazing people, art, music, conversation – everything from sculpture to film.

If you are one of those people who feels like Pittsburgh is always the same (if you read IheartPGH occasionally I hope you still don’t think like that) then you must attend this event.

Even Better!

I was just checking out the Flux Website – Flux is getting greener and better.

FLUX is going Green!
FLUX is making the investment to go “green and has contracted with Restorative Events to make the events the “greenest in Pittsburgh. To kick-off the initiative at FLUX 15, Restorative Events has ensured that every waste related item used at FLUX is recycledevery cup and bottle, as well as some of the installations, will be collected and taken to a recycling center. Wristbands and paper products are made from 100% recycled paper and soy-based inks were used for marketing materials. As always, FLUX supplies locally made beer from Penn Brewery and has historically been a champion of adaptive re-use creatively using old structures for new purposes. In addition, FLUX encourages attendees to use alternate and public transportation and is sponsoring a bike valet service hosted by Bike Pittsburgh for FLUX 15.

Free Bike Valet / partnership with Bike Pittsburgh
FLUX is sponsoring Bike Valet service that will be managed by Bike Pittsburgh and will allow attendees to ride their bike and park it in a safe, secure, monitored in-door space for the evening. The Bike Valet will be located on Smithfield, just across the street from the event entrance, at the former site of the Barnes & Noble. The service is FREE to all FLUX attendees.

Spatial design by local architecture + design firm SO-AD
FLUX has teamed up with local architects and designers David Burns and Jason Morris of SO-AD to develop an interior space plan, improve the visitor experience and enhance the architectural uniqueness of the event location.

New wine sponsor!
In addition to yummy beer from Penn Brewery, red & white wine will now be available at FLUX from Barefoot Wines via a sponsorship with the Three Rivers Arts Festival. Beer will be $2 a bottle. Wine $3 dollars a cup.
