Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while adjusting to life in a post-apocalyptic world…)

Friday, February 16
The Great Guinness Toast, 8:00 p.m., Mullaney’s Harp And Fiddle, Strip District
toucan That yearly thing to get people to drink Guinness to set a new world’s record for largest toast that doesn’t involve a toaster happens tonight at locations varied and widespread, but the place to be is probably dahn Mullaney’s in the Strip. They’ll have giveaways all night and live broadcasts by local radio stations. They don’t say which radio stations, so, I mean, it could be anyone. I’m kinda hoping the whole crew from WQED will be there, if only to hear the dulcet quiet tones of a classical DJ doing the standard radio station location jive of “Hey, come on down to Mullaney’s, jump in the QED money machine, and then do a shot with me. And don’t forget to pick up your QED ‘Cellists Do It Sitting Down’ beer koozie. Let’s rock on now with Marche Slave by Tchaikovsky part of a ’20 in a row or 20 thousand dollars’ all day marathon.”

They usually get packed for this deal, and in addition to the toast, Seamus Kennedy performs at 9, so it’d probably be a good idea to get there early-ish.

Savage Republic, 8:00 p.m., Lawrenceville Moose, Lawrenceville
savage_republic_logoi Lindsay (who also braved the weather to drink at D’s the other night during our time of crisis) posted this up the other day and writes about it better than I could ever hope to, so just go read it there. I will say that this looks like a really good solid show, and why would one ever not go to the L’ville Moose?

Paul Tabachneck, 9:00 p.m., Cabaret At Theater Square, Dahntahn
backstage bar Free is good, so good… I like free a lot. Probably too much, but that’s something I’ve got to work out with my therapist, that poor, poor man. I’m sure he never saw this coming when he went to grad school or he might’ve made a different career choice. He’s earning his money, that’s for sure… I mean, I mentioned something about my childhood and he did that sort of “sucking in your breath through your teeth while wincing and saying ‘ooo'” thing. That’s probably not a good sign, is it?

What? Oh, right, yeah, the Tabachneck thing… The Cultural Trust’s page says that Paul is “A bright & engaging singer/songwriter” and that his lyrics “reflect on loves lost and let loose.” Ok, so far so good, we all love a good torch song, don’t we? He does some covers in his act, and is also known for his “dark humor”. And that’s all well and good, but of greater import is the fact that Happy Hour at the Backstage Bar is from 9 to 11. So, no cover to get in, and the drinks are gonna be on special at a non-traditional-happy-hour time of day – honestly, what’s stopping you? Also, it’s a smoke-free environment, and I know how important the whole “breathing thing” is to some of you.

Saturday, February 17
Rod Stewart , 8:00 p.m., Mellon Civic Arena, Dahntahn
Too subtle over there on the left? Never let it be said I won’t perpetuate an Urban Legend.

Stewart will be playing all the hits, I’m sure, although I’m not 100% sure whose hits those will be. They might be his songs or they might be tunes from the “Standards” albums he’s been putting out the past few years. I’m guessing a combination of both, but I’m not sure how well “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” will fly at this point. It could be bizarre, like Debbie Reynolds singing “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

An Evening with Aaron McGruder, 8:00 p.m., Byham Theater, Dahntahn
boondocks_wide The creator of the much-missed (by me, at least) comic strip The Boondocks comes in for a night at the Byham. The thing is, it doesn’t actually say what he’s going to do there. I’m assuming that means a speech of some sort, perhaps a look at his work, both the strip and the tv show, and a Q&A session. He’s never been afraid to speak his mind with regards to politics which is, in my opinion, a good thing in a comic strip author. Like that time when Cathy Guisewite got arrested for macing riot cops at that WTO protest in Seattle a couple years back.

Ok, I may have made that last part up.

Fun Fact: Warhol on MTV

Did you know that Andy Warhol had a tv show on MTV in 1986? Last week I was working on creating this t-shirt. (Visit WashableWisdom.com for the story behind the quote.)

A visit to Wikipedia’s entry on Andy Warhol and I learned that Warhol had a show, Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes, on MTV.   Cool and kind of unexpected.  I couldn’t find anything else about the show online. Does anyone remember seeing the show? Are there any clips on the show online?

Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while celebrating a rodent…)

Friday, February 2
Exposure: Pittsburgh, 7:00 p.m., Club Havana, Shadyside
rettig_headshot Marc Rettig (pictured) is this months feature photographer and this show wraps up the involvement with Club Havana. No word yet on where it’ll be moving to, but as long as they keep it at a bar, I’ll be happy. And drunk.

Marc is originally from Montana, and has lived throughout the US, coming to Pittsburgh about five years ago as a visiting professor of design at CMU. He liked it here and settled in, opening up his own business. As one of the members of the Pittsburgh flickr group, he displays his love for his adopted home through his work, sometimes visiting abandoned industrial spaces, finding beauty in the decay, art where there is ruin. His photography is done with a designer’s eye, but used as a creative outlet that has nothing to do with his work. The show promises to be a good one.

As always, there will be much drinking and dancing to the music provided by the DJs.

Saturday, February 3
Art Opening: (U=You)+(M=Me)+(O=Others), 6:00 p.m., moxie DaDA, North Side
John Eastman’s pen & ink drawings exhibit, (U=You)+(M=Me)+(O=Others) opens at the new moxie space on the North Side. The pieces are titled “UMOs”, and that means drawings of “contorted individuals from society reflecting humans as imperfect beings”.

Which, y’know, could mean that it’s a realism show, but it’s not. It’s an “Opening Reception” which usually means free stuff in the way of wine/beer and snacks. There’s nothing like that explicitly mentioned here, though, so freeloader beware.

Pittsburgh Pagan Potluck, 6:00 p.m., Moonstones, Dormont
potluckLocal Witches, Druids, Wiccans, Shamans, and the like get together and whoop it up at the Pagan Potluck. This is a chance to get to know your local pagan, and also lets the local covens network a bit. They want you to bring a dish, and sweet Lord, (I know, yeah) I hope someone makes a Stonehenge out of marzipan.

I’m not even gonna attempt to make a snarky comment lest I get, y’know, warts or something. I dunno, a plague of boils, the gyp, whatever… My mama didn’t raise no dummy, at least when it comes to dealing with witches and giving them the proper respect they deserve. Who wants the mal occhio, really? Not me, baby, not me.

Palm Saturdays feat: Humanaut, 9:00 p.m., Palm, Station Square
Get yo house on with Steve Porter. They’re very emphatic about this, so I’ll just quote: “ONLY 300 TICKETS WILL BE SOLD – PRESALE ONLY! There will be NO door tickets.”

So, he must be kind of a big deal. It’s 15 bucks, and doors open at 9.

Sunday, February 4
WYEP Alternative Souper Bowl, 12:00 p.m., Borders, Eastside ‘Sliberty
superbowlLocal music for a cause. It’s at Borders, so it can’t get the “Drinking for a Cause” label, but so be it, it’s still a good idea. Bring some non-perishable food items and enjoy the fun and live music from three great local bands with plenty of time to get home to watch the commercials that go on in between plays. Seriously, the Super Bowl’s kind of a pain in the ass anymore, because it takes so friggin’ long to watch the game. Ok, so ‘Em Stillerz aren’t in it this year, which my hypertension is thankful for, but still… I can’t even relax to watch the game because of the interminable commercials and half time show. Sure, it’s Prince, I love Prince, but do you think we’re gonna get a rollicking version of “Darling Nikki”? ‘Cos I don’t. Here’s hoping the assless chaps make an appearance, if only for the absurdity of it, and the controversy it’d cause.

Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while freezing your ya-yas off…)

Quick note: I was busy all morning shoveling and salting the walk here at the luxuriously-appointed World Headquarters of iheartpgh.com so that Lindsay and Natalia wouldn’t soil their Manolo Blahniks when they rolled in sometime this afternoon around 4ish for a good solid hours work, so this had just been the Friday stuff, but now the post has been updated with the Saturday and Sunday highlights dropped in. Read on, MacDuff.

Friday, January 26
Gallery Crawl, 5:30 p.m., Cultural District, Dahntahn
headless_snowman Given the weather, the main thing here (among all of the galleries featuring great work and live music) is the Hot Chocolate and marshmallows that will be available free in the lobby of the Cabaret Theater in Theater Square. The marshmallows are shaped like snowmen, so this is your chance to at least symbolically exact revenge on Winter by biting the heads off first, pretending you’re a giant monster from a 50s Japanese sci-fi flick. Make some sort of “grarrrr!” sound to show the staff at the Cabaret Theater that you mean business, and are not one to be trifled with. This will help you to get that second mug of cocoa much quicker. Git Aht Tipâ„¢: Slipping some butterscotch schnapps into hot chocolate makes it a lot better, especially in the mid-term.

The walk goes all over the Cultural District and you can hit plenty of galleries, with just about every different kind of work available for you to cast eyes upon. Free music abounds, and free Samba and Salsa lessons (the dance, not the condiment) are running every hour at the Bricolage Space. The overall advice? Keep moving, there’s a lot to see, and it’ll keep you warm.

The Povertyneck Hillbillies, 8:00 p.m., Mr. Smalls, Millvale
jcashThey’re kind of a big deal, I think. They get a lot of national notice, they’re homegrown, and even at a known rock joint that has a friggin’ skatepark attached to it, they’re standing room only tonight. Me, I dunno… I like my country music to be old school, about drinkin’, and heartbreak, and drinkin’. Preferably sung by someone who has lived through drug addiction, maybe a heart attack or two, a divorce, and rampant bouts of alcoholism. That’s country music, pardnah. Somebody help me out here – do the PNH do this kind of thing?

Saturday, January 27
Freestyle Motocross, 7:30 p.m., Mellon Civic Arena
fmxYou’ll pay for the whole seat, but you’ll only need the edge! Well, ok, probably not, I mean, the back part of your ass’ll get numb after about 20 minutes, and you’ll wanna lean back with your Coors Light, take a load off so to speak. Go and see motorcycles flying through the air, going sideways, flipping around, and healing the sick.

Not that last one. But the other things, yeah, those’ll be there. What you really want to see is all of the ‘in-the-air’ stunts with names like ‘the superman seat grab’, the ‘back flip’, the ‘rock solid’ and more, most o them taking place 30 or 40 feet above the floor of the arena. According to the site, “New tricks are created each year and it’s all about who gets the BIG AIR – the big tricks and the most audience reaction and respect!”

Hey, it’s got an all caps and an exclamation point, so it must be exciting! Imagine if there were, I dunno, MORE THAN ONE!!! HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!

Hmmm… I dunno, maybe not. Whatever, enjoy the beer.

Steel City Derby Demons, 6:00 p.m., Bladerunners, Harmarville
dresta_kill Pictured, Dresta Kill, the Captain of my favorite team (based solely on team name), The Bitch Doctors. Dresta likes long walks on the beach, kittens, and crushing people that cross her into small puddles of ooze. And I think I’m in love.

Fresh off their City Paper cover story, the Steel City Derby Demons put on an exhibition bout up at Bladerunners in Harmarville. The new “Women’s Flat Track Derby Association” has a real Suicide Girls kinda feel to it, and I dig the whole idea. It’s throwback and the future at the same time, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised that some of the participants will be attending Burning Man later this year, eschewing the bikes out on the desert in favor of rollerskates, although who knows how well that’d work on the playa. But hell, if anybody would soldier on in the face of difficulty, it’s future Mrs Git Aht, Dresta Kill. Dresta, sweetheart, call me. We’ll go out and beat people up some Tuesday night after work and then relax with a beer afterwards, it’ll be fun.

Sunday, January 28
Rembrandt et al, 12:00 p.m., Carnegie Museum Of Art, Oakland
The Carnegie’s got an exhibit of Rembrandt prints running now through February 11th, all etchings spanning three decades that will show the evolution of his style. Works included are Self-Portrait Leaning on a Stone Sill, (1639); The Three Trees (1643), and my personal favorite which truly shows the incredible depth of his work, Christ Crucified Between Two Thieves (The Three Crosses) While Dogs Play Poker In The Foreground, 4th state (c. 1660).

The CMOA page says this year marks the 400th anniversary of his birth, and the chronological distance between then and now always begs the question: What would Rembrandt be doing if he were alive today? And the answer, of course, is “clawing at the inside of his coffin”, but that’s nether here nor there.

There are a couple other exhibits going on, including an exhaustive collection of Tiffany Desk sets.

Ok, contain yourselves if you can, have a lie down. They’ve also got an installation piece by Jonathon Borofsky, the same guy that has the “Walking To The Clouds” piece up on the CMU campus. It’s called “Human Structures” and it’s meant to be walked around and through. Well, not literally through because that would reduce it’s value, but you know what I mean. All in all, it sounds like a pleasant way to spend a Winter afternoon.

Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while letting the officer know exactly how you feel…)

Friday, January 19
The Parlour Boys, 9:30 p.m., Brillobox, Upper Larryville
The Parlour Boys throw a good show, with audience participation, singalong, dancing and boozing. It’s everything I could want in a rock show, except for the part where the Brazilian models rub my neck the entire time I’m enjoying the music. Nice Device and Donora are the openers.

Soulcialism, 10:00 p.m., The White Eagle, Sahsside
soulcialismHeat up the cold winter night by packing your ass into the Eagle with 100 or so of your closest, soul-loving friends. Drinks are cheap, the music’s great, the dancing’s even better, and there ain’t no cover (yes, i now it’s a double negative, which I guess could mean that there is a cover, but you need to stop being so literal and have some fun for a change, fer chrissakes…)

Saturday, January 20
B-Sides: Artist’s Experiments and “Seconds” Sale, 6:00 p.m., Planet Art Gallery, Mt. Lebanon
“Refreshments”. We all know what that means, don’t we? Although, the concept of refreshment is one of those means different things to different people things, so your particular refreshment might not be available. For instance, I think a pint of Martini is fantastic for a summer’s day, although it can make for a truly horrendous summer’s night.

Whatever your thoughts on refreshments, this show’s all about work that the artist feels isn’t up to their standards, but what the hell, it’s already made, so… The Savings Get Passed On To You! Let their mistake become your treasure as these pieces go for up to 60% off of their original prices. Think of it as an “Artist’s Seconds” sale. Paintings, pottery, blown glass, turned wood, fused glass, jewelry, and the proverbial “and more” will be available. Artists represented: Scott Hunter, Joe Sendek, Jason Amstutz, Denise Graham, Birch Frew, Sandy Miller, Karen Howell, and others. It’s all on a first-come, first-serve basis, so if you really want the bargains and best selection, get there when they open Saturday, which is 11 a.m. Yeah, I know, but you can take a nap later. I’m gonna get there early because I want that “Dog’s Playing Poker” painting that has a cat in it for it’s rarity and collector’s value.

A Taste Of Ireland, 7:30 p.m., The Irish Center Of Pittsburgh, Squirrel Hill-ish
bonodrunk You’d think a taste of Ireland would involve whatever it is they do to the Blarney Stone at night after the tourists leave, but no. In this case, it’s all about the beer. Well, for me it is. Guinness all night, live music, and a stunning lack of potatoes. Consider this a warm-up for St. Patrick’s Day… Training camp, if you will. And you will, let’s not kid ourselves.

Sunday, January 21
A Night Of Opulence, 4:00 p.m., Rhythm House Cafe, Bridgeville
A fund raiser for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, this is your “Drinking For A Cause” event for the weekend. It’s only 15 bucks, and includes hors d’ouevres, a silent auction, and music. There’s also a cash bar, but hey, fund raiser, so you can’t complain. And it wouldn’t hurt to stick around afterwards, because the Jazz starts up in the main room later, where the Pittsburgh Jazz Society puts on its weekly show, this week featuring the Student Jazz Band.
