COMING SOON! THE COMMUNITY 2.0 CHALLENGE

CROWDSOURCING COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION

The communities of Braddock, North Braddock, Rankin, and Swissvale—through the Tri-Boro Development Forum (TBDF)—are sponsoring an open contest to find practical solutions to pressing problems. Because no matter how hard we try, the problems we face are too large for any one community to solve on their own. The Challenge will: · Connect people from around the region and across the globe through public forums, multimedia technology, and social networking online and off. · Capitalize on every person’s area of expertise, from residents and local leaders to experts in community development, to make collaboration easier and more effective· Take advantage of other communities’ successful efforts to solve problems that are similar to our own. · Engage the community to make civic affairs fun, with the chance to win cash prizes! Interested? The Community 2.0 Challenge kickoff event is Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at the Braddock Carnegie Library. The event will include an open house from 4:00-6:00pm to familiarize you with the history and geography of the area. An open forum from 6:00-7:00pm will give people an opportunity to voice their concerns. A speaker panel from 7:00-8:00pm will lend their advice on how to articulate these concerns into practical action. And don’t worry if you’re not from around here, all the information you’ll need will be available online at our web site. Hiking, Whiskey and Bagpipes

I am a big big big supporter of Venture Outdoors – this organization exists to get anyone and everyone outside. This is my kind of hike – one that includes Whiskey and a bagpipe player.
Whiskey Tasting Hike *New Date*
Explore the highlands of Mount Lebanon on a hike through little known Bird Park. We will take a frosty walk for one hour, returning to a leader’s house for a sampling of whiskey to warm our hearts. A better evening cannot be found on this side of the Atlantic. To help us conjure the images of the Highlands, this event will feature the bagpipe player.
Location: Bird Park, South Hills
Time: 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Cost: $30.00 member/$50.00 non-member
Organization: Venture Outdoors

Knit and Crochet Festival & The Pittsburgh Crochet Cape

All the cool kids are knitting these days. Thank goodness, I have actually been knitting since I was 10 but now all of my friends have asked for knitting lessons. I attended this event last year – if you like visiting one of Pittsburgh’s local knitting shop then you will love this festival. The Pittsburgh Knit & Crochet festival is a ball of fun. 30+ vendors selling all sorts of yarn and supplies. People are spinning yarns and making all sorts of cool stuff.

Fun Fact: Festival Coordinator – Barbara Grossman, wife of former Steeler Randy Grossman

Here are some pictures I took last year – The Pittsburgh Crochet Group created the Pittsburgh Cape – an elaborate cape depicting scenes and icons of Pittsburgh- yes they crocheted a jar of pickles in the right hand picture. This group and many local knitters and crocheters make and donate tons of items to local hospitals and charities.
