Share Your PGH Photos HERE!

yourphotoshere

You may have noticed a new look for IheartPGH recently – we are trying to make the site easier to use and easier to find more information that you might be looking for about Pittsburgh.  We have long wanted to show off more great pictures of this fine city!  The front page here and the side bar are now displaying photos from the IheartPGH Flickr Group.  If you are a Flickr user please join the group and share your photos!  Currently the box on the front pages displays the most recent photo – I am trying to find a way to have it display a slide show and include more information about who took the photo too.

If you have any other ideas on how we can improve IheartPGH please share or if you are a webdesigner who would like to help us with a new wordpress theme we would love to talk to you too!

Technical Difficulties – IheartPGH Hacked

Twitter Fail Whale is back

Just wanted to post a quick update to let everyone know we are working on the problem.  I was away last week and returned to find that IheartPGH was reposting old posts as new ones.  The daily emails are automatically generated so I apologize that you have been getting emails with old information.  I am not sure what caused the problem – maybe some unhappy Detroit fans? Just kidding.

It looks like the site was hacked and I know that Google had listed it with a warning.  I have fixed some things up and it looks like the warning has been lifited.  The IheartPGH twitter account was also suspended – I have filled out the form to have the twitter account fixed and I am still waiting on that.

The great folks at WeFixWP are looking into the back end to check and see what the issue may be.  Hopefully we will be back to normal shortly. Continue reading

Upgrades and Advertisements

You may have noticed – well I hope you noticed – that we have been playing around with some advertisements over there in the sidebar.  We have been hoping to start on some upgrades to IheartPGH in the near future.  Last year the IheartPGH community was super helpful when we needed to move to a new webhost – thanks to some great volunteers we moved the website to MediaTemple and haven’t had a problem with webhosting since.

We have already been working with the good folks at WeFixWP about doing some upgrades to the backend and hopefully the look of the website.  We have been testing out the ads to see if we can generate a little bit of money to pay for some of the hosting upgrade costs.  We feel very strongly that we don’t want ads to take over the website and have tried to keep them to the sidebar and the footer.  We know that header ads earn more money but we just don’t want to put ads all over the website – especially the header.  Please feel free to share your thoughts, concerns and complaints (be nice) about the ads on the site by leaving a comment or sending an email to info at iheartpgh@gmail.com.

Advertise on IheartPGH

One of the ways you can support IheartPGH is by running an ad on our site.  We have just added the adbox on the sidebar through a service called ProjectWonderful – which allows users to bid on the ad space.  We are starting the bidding at $0.10/day.  It is pretty easy to post your ad on the side bar – just click the link above the ad box and follow the instructions.

Other ways you can Support IheartPGH…

  • Check out the IheartPGH Spreadshirt shop.  We are always looking for new t-shirt ideas for the shop!  Have an idea for a shirt – please let us know.
  • Need Serious Website Hosting? – click this link to set up a website at Media Temple – if you set up a website through our link we will get a credit towards our hosting costs.  If you want to set up a smaller website and need some hosting suggestions please let me know.

Dear IheartPGH … Pittsburgh Marriage Proposal Ideas?

my proposal to mandyImage by winkydo via Flickr

Yesterday, I opened up my email to find one with the subject help – I opened the email thinking maybe it was a request to post an event or recommend a neighborhood – but this is a big request…

Subject: help

Dear IheartPGH,

Needed an awesome idea and figured you were the best person to turn to.

I want to figure out the coolest way to propose to my girlfriend in Pittsburgh. I’ve Googled a bunch of stuff, taking out billboards, renting a limo etc. I really wanted to figure out if it were possible to have dinner and propose …

I have received a few emails to IheartPGH over the past few years and I try to reply with helpful answers to all of them – but this is a big one and I have no experience with marriage proposals – I am totally flattered you thought to email me. If you are looking for advice on where to eat lunch for less than $5 (pretzel Shop) or best coffee (La Prima) or where can I find a bar with the largest taxidermy collection (Joe’s Bar, Ligonier) – I can help with that. The prefect Pittsburgh marriage proposal – not my area of expertise!

With his permission (and I promised to keep him anonymous so that it is a surprise,) I am posting this request to see what you dear readers of IheartPGH can suggest.

I did a little blog research on marriage proposals, thus far no one has blogged a Pittsburgh engagement story. Plenty of people have blogged about their engagement stories – Sean Bonner, one of the founders of Metroblogs, proposed over Twitter (read her side of the story here).  Their story was also covered by Boing Boing  and Wired covered some other Tweetheart stories here.  I am sure that you can do better than this suggestion of proposing by instant message, from Engagement-ideas.com (yes that blog exists).  We are not necessarily looking for geeky proposal ideas – this is about Pittsburgh proposal ideas.

So please leave your suggestions and ideas here in the comments – if you have a great Pittsburgh engagement story – please share that too. If you would prefer to send your ideas by email – please email info@iheartpgh.com and I will forward all of your ideas to the lucky guy. Continue reading
