Zombies Save Pittsburgh – A Halloween Party for A Good Cause

Can Zombies Save Pittsburgh?  With your help yes! (If you are just looking for details on the Zombie Halloween Party scroll to the bottom of the page – keep reading for details on how and why I think you should check out the party).

CHS-Plain-MastheadFor the past few holiday seasons, IheartPGH has joined with other bloggers to help a Pittsburgh non-profit – Community Human Services (CHS) – make sure that some of the less fortunate Pittsburghers have some holiday gifts.  I was happy to support this project and over the past few years I have learned a lot more about CHS and the incredible and important services they provide.

Last year, at the holiday party I had the opportunity to chat with a woman who works for CHS and works with the kids in Allegheny County that have signed themselves out of the foster care system.  These are 18 year-olds that don’t have families and many don’t have a place to live.  CHS works to get these kids housing and to give them at least some sort of a holiday gift.

I have been thinking about the best way to write about CHS and their upcoming Halloween Party – and then I read this article in the Tampa Bay Times this afternoon – Amid churchgoers, an orphan pleads for a family, October 7, 2013.  And I burst into tears.  Please take a moment to read this story.  I was struck by how along this kid felt and I’ve been thinking all day about what I can do about this.  While I am not sure what I can do to help Davion find a family in Florida – I can help to support a Pittsburgh organization that is working on these issues right here.

Fortunately, you don’t have to wait until December to support CHS! This Saturday, CHS is hosting what is sure to be an incredible event, No One Survives Alone, a zombie themed Halloween Party – this Saturday, October 19, 2013.  The party is going to be at Clear Story Studios – which is an incredible office space located on the South Side. Music by DJ Zombo, a beer bar sponsored by Yuengling, specialty cocktails with Fortis Vodka and Bluecoat Gin, appetizers from Whole Foods, Red Oak Cafe and Catering.

8 Things to Store Around Town for Pittsburgh Events

If you’re visiting Pittsburgh for the 1st or 500th time to attend a big event, you might travel with supplies and equipment. Luckily, you can use Spacefinity.com – an online marketplace to connect with friendly neighborhood residents to store your stuff around town. Here’s a list of some of the big annual events and the stuff you can put in storage:

  1. Art – Over 10,000 visual and performing artists have presented work at the Three Rivers Arts Festival since the event started in 1960. With all of the creating, planning, and organizing, who has time to worry about tables, chairs, and finding a place to put everything? Discover a nearby garage to store your art supplies before the festival.
  2. Bikes – BikePGH organizes an annual event called BikeFest which leads up to Pedal Pittsburgh, Western PA’s Largest Bicycle Ride with around 3,000 participants. Also, the Great Allegheny Passage, a 150-mile bike trail that connects Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Md., (then joining C&O Canal Towpath to Washington D.C.), was completed earlier this summer. Find a space to store your bike and pick it up when you’re in town for a ride.
  3. Boats – Every year, over 500,000 spectators visit the Three Rivers Regatta – a boating and water sports festival held at the Point over the 4th of July. Find a space to store your boat before, after, or during the festival in a warehouse, garage, or open lot.
  4. Cars – The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix attracts more than 250,000 people to Schenley Park each year for the nation’s largest vintage sports car racing event. All proceeds from the event go to the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and Allegheny Valley School. Store your classic car in a nearby garage and get ready to race on the city streets for a good cause.
  5. Costumes – The world’s largest furry convention, Anthrocon, draws a crowd of over 5,000 people to Downtown Pittsburgh every year. Join the costume-clad community as your favorite anthropomorphic animal character or check out the Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival and journey back to the age of knights and maidens. Before you travel back to being a present day human, find a place to store your costumes.
  6. Golf Clubs – Did you know that the Oakmont Country Club has hosted more combined USGA and PGA championships than any other course in the U.S., including eight United States Opens, five U.S. Amateurs, three PGA Championships, and two U.S. Women’s Opens? Visit Pittsburgh for the upcoming 2016 U.S. Open Championship in Oakmont and keep your golf clubs in nearby storage for when you’re ready to play a round.
  7. Tailgating Equipment – Tailgating is a time-honored tradition before big a Steelers, Pirates, or Penguins game, but you’ll need to bring tailgating gear: grills, coolers, food, drinks, chairs, tables… and if you’re driving or flying in from out of town, it’s inconvenient to bring those items with you. Instead, store them in a garage near a grocery store and pick everything up on the way to the game.
  8. Giant Rubber Ducky – The Rubber Duck Project will launch the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts with a 40-foot-tall rubber duck in the Allegheny River from September 27 – October 20, 2013. According to this Post-Gazette article, “because of its size, the duck is constructed from scratch in the city that it’s visiting.” So if you’re a giant rubber duck artist who needs a warehouse, Spacefinity lists some spaces available for such an occassion.

The Spacefinity team launched the online marketplace for space in August 2013. Currently, we have 65 Spacelords listing garages, warehouses, basements, spare rooms, outside lots, and even an airplane hangar in Pittsburgh. Find space or list space today at Spacefinity.com! Breaking Bad Trivia Night – Wed.Sept 25 @ James St. Gastropub

I mentioned this event last week on Twitter and it seems that Pittsburgh is home to a few Breaking Bad fans.  Here are the details for the Breaking Bad Trivia Night on September 25.

I was all set to write a long post about this trivia night filled with Breaking Bad references – however this blogger only watches the city of Pittsburgh channel and Pittsburgh Today Live.  Thankfully, every other publication in Pittsburgh has posted about this trivia night – you can read more about the trivia night …

If you are looking for a regular trivia night – Wednesday is a big trivia night in Pittsburgh – Brillobox, Cappy’s and Harvard and Highland host trivia events every Wednesday nights.  I don’t know much more about the Geeks Who Drink folks who are organizing this event – from the Facebook page it looks like they are running the Breaking Bad trivia in several cities on September 25.  I do know that Brillobox, Cappy’s and Harvard and Highland are all locally owned establishments and there is no charge for their trivia nights.

Here are the FAQ for the Geeks Who Drink

How do you sign up? Where do you buy tickets? You don’t.
Get to the quiz venue early (we recommend an hour minimum) with cash for your entry fee to ensure seating.

What should I do with the money if I win?
YOU NEED TO PAY YOUR TAXES, TED

Is this a free quiz?
No, it’s $5 per person to play (bring cash!), and we’ll ask you to pay for everyone on your team before we give you quiz materials.

What’s the maximum/minimum players per team?
There is no minimum, but if you want to win, you should have a fully staffed squad. Use our Facebook and Twitter to recruit. Team maximum is strictly six players, as always.

Can we play the quiz twice by traveling to another city?
No. No. And no. First of all, that’d be impressive, because our themed quizzes are now always on one day (with the rarest of exceptions). Secondly, even if you figure out a way to cheat, don’t do it. We will catch you, and we will cram you into a plastic barrel and pour our beers on you.

Can minors play?
That’s entirely up to the venue. Check with them.

Do spectators have to pay?
Yes. Yes, they do. Spectators generally have to pay for sporting events, right? This also goes for Geeks Who Drink employees that aren’t working at the event.

Can my dad/girlfriend/friend sit at our table and not play?
No. Six people max seated at a table and all players must pay.

Can you host this at BLANK bar in BLANK city?
No. We host these at venues that meet certain criteria. So, if we’re not in your city, there won’t be a quiz. If we’re in your city, and there’s no quiz, we’re sorry. Feel free to let us know if you think demand is there, and maybe next time we’ll get it started.

Is there a prize for second place?
Nope, this is winner take all. But second place is impressive; you should be proud.

How is the prize amount determined?
In most cases, the prize amount is 50% of the total take. Why not 100%? Because we have to cover our costs of producing and marketing these event quizzes.

Will BLANK TOPIC be covered?
Everything is fair game. Study hard. Apply yourself. And we never give clues.

Do I need to RSVP?
Seating is first-come, first-served and there are no reservations. These things quite often sell out, so get there early to guarantee a seat.
